Job Description

Spokane Public Schools is a dedicated educational institution committed to fostering a loving and collaborative learning community where every student is welcomed and supported to thrive. This district values diversity and inclusivity, striving to cultivate an environment where differences are embraced and cherished. Spokane Public Schools serves a diverse learner population, and staff members are expected to have a strong passion and commitment to the individuals they serve. The district promotes teamwork, continuous growth, and reflection through feedback, encouraging its staff to be lifelong learners and positive problem solvers who can adapt and excel in a dynamic educational setting.

The current opportunity is for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Continuing Contract position in Culinary Arts, anticipated to begin with the 2026-27 school year. This role is designed for a highly skilled and qualified Culinary Arts educator who holds or is eligible to obtain a Washington State CTE Teaching Certificate with the appropriate Culinary Arts V-code endorsement. If the candidate is not yet certified, they must be willing to begin a CTE Plan 2 certification program within two years of hire.

In this role, the Culinary Arts teacher will be responsible for organizing and delivering instructional programs aligned with prescribed curricula that cater to the varied abilities of students. Effective classroom management and discipline skills are essential to creating and maintaining a productive learning environment. The educator will prepare and maintain detailed long-range and weekly lesson plans while maintaining accurate student records. Collaboration within the department and with other staff members is vital to continuously evaluate, develop, and improve the program. Alongside academic duties, the instructor will demonstrate critical culinary skills, including knife handling, hand sharpening, various cooking techniques such as sautéing, broiling, grilling, and frying, and the use of both commercial kitchen and bakery equipment. These practical skills will be taught and practiced daily with students, reinforcing hands-on learning.

Physical demands are significant in this role, requiring the ability to move and carry heavy bulk food items as well as cookware and to manage kitchen equipment and tools safely and efficiently. The instructor must be physically capable of standing and walking extensively throughout the day and maneuvering ladders as necessary. These demands underscore the active and engaging nature of this teaching position, where practical culinary skills are demonstrated alongside instructional expertise.

Spokane Public Schools values inclusive and respectful relationships with students, parents, and colleagues across diverse backgrounds. This teaching position offers extensive benefits through the School Employee Benefits Board (SEBB), including medical, dental, and vision plans, life insurance, paid time off such as vacation, sick leave, and holidays, and additional compensation provisions aligned with collective bargaining agreements. Moreover, the district supports continuous professional development and values teachers who incorporate technology into their teaching and administrative tasks.
