Job Description
Hy-Vee is a well-established supermarket chain known for its commitment to excellent customer service and providing fresh, quality products to communities across the United States. At Hy-Vee, the people who make up the workforce are considered the company's greatest strength. The company's promise, "a helpful smile in every aisle," reflects its dedication to creating a welcoming and supportive shopping experience for customers. Hy-Vee fosters an environment where employees are fully engaged, motivated, and collaborative, ensuring that each customer interaction is friendly, efficient, and positive. This culture of teamwork and growth mindset contributes significantly to the company’s ongoing success and its strong presence in the grocery retail industry.
The role of Sushi Chef at Hy-Vee is a specialized position within the Asian department, designed for professionals passionate about culinary excellence and customer service. The Sushi Chef’s primary responsibility is to prepare fresh sushi products, both packaged and made-to-order, that meet high-quality standards. This involves handling ingredients safely, following food safety protocols, and ensuring accurate inventory management by ordering and receiving products, verifying order accuracy, labeling, dating, and properly storing items. This role requires meticulous care for sanitation and cleanliness standards to maintain a safe and inviting food preparation environment.
In addition to preparing sushi, the Sushi Chef plays a crucial role in promoting a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient service to both customers and team members. Greeting customers warmly, learning and using their names when possible, answering product-related inquiries over the phone, and assisting with product selection are essential elements of the job. The Sushi Chef is expected to contribute to the development of an excellent shopping experience by working collaboratively with colleagues, offering training when needed, and participating in food merchandising initiatives such as product layout and demonstration events.
This position is non-exempt and reports to higher management such as the District Store Director and Store Manager, highlighting the collaborative nature and the importance of communication within store operations. The Sushi Chef also supervises the work of the Sushi Clerk, ensuring standards and productivity goals are met. Candidates should possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent, along with Hy-Vee food safety training and certification. Prior experience in a related role, especially in meal preparation or sushi making, is preferred, as is the ability to handle physical demands such as lifting and standing for extended periods.
Working as a Sushi Chef at Hy-Vee means being part of a fast-paced, dynamic environment where adherence to sanitation, professionalism, and customer-centered service is critical. A strong ability to solve problems creatively, perform arithmetic calculations, and communicate effectively is required to thrive in this role. Furthermore, exposure to raw fish, cleaning chemicals, and noise is part of the daily working conditions, necessitating a candidate who is resilient and adaptable.
If you are a motivated individual with a passion for quality food preparation and a commitment to outstanding customer service, the Sushi Chef position at Hy-Vee offers a fulfilling career opportunity. Join Hy-Vee's dedicated team and contribute to delivering "a helpful smile in every aisle" that customers value and appreciate.
