The role of Sushi Chef at Hy-Vee is a vital position within the Asian department. This non-exempt role is focused on preparing fresh, high-quality sushi for customers, both packaged and made-to-order, while ensuring the safe handling of food. As a Sushi Chef, you will play a key part in maintaining the store's positive image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service not only to incoming customers but also to team members within the store. Your responsibilities will include ordering and receiving products, managing inventory by labeling and dating items, and ensuring all product placements are correctly handled.

This position requires a combination of culinary skills, customer service excellence, and teamwork. You will be actively involved in food preparation, merchandising, and product presentation to enhance the shopping experience. The role also includes training and guiding the Sushi Clerk and other team members, fostering a cooperative workplace atmosphere. Adherence to hygiene, sanitation, and safety standards is crucial, as is a commitment to following company policies and store-specific guidelines.

Hy-Vee offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $16.00 to $20.00, commensurate with experience. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • food safety certification
  • one to three years of similar or related work experience preferably in food preparation
  • physical ability to lift frequently up to 50 pounds and constantly up to 10 pounds
  • ability to perform physical activities such as balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • ability to see with or without correction including depth perception and color vision
  • willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with exposure to raw fish, flour, dust, noise, temperature extremes, and occasional cleaning chemicals
  • commitment to punctuality and adherence to company policies
  • successful completion of pre-employment drug screening

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • one to three years of related experience in food preparation preferably in sushi or meal preparation
  • Hy-Vee food safety training
  • food safety certified
  • ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • strong problem-solving skills with ability to think logically and scientifically
  • effective communication skills including composing correspondence and following technical manuals
  • ability to interact positively with customers and team members
  • ability to work as part of a team and provide basic guidance to others

Job Duties

  • Prepares fresh sushi for customers both packaged and made-to-order
  • provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
  • smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store
  • makes an effort to learn customers' names and to address them by name whenever possible
  • answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call including taking product orders
  • assists customers by escorting them to the products they're looking for, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests, performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience
  • works with co-workers as a team and provides training to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
  • understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat
  • involved in schedules and overseeing food ordering and planning
  • communicates to customers on phone, in person, or on e-mail regarding food and food preparation
  • aids in the merchandising techniques for sushi foods
  • aids in the merchandising food layout
  • attends company wide and industry meetings as assigned
  • adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines
  • reports to work when scheduled and on time
