Job Description

Hy-Vee is a well-established and respected supermarket chain known for its commitment to quality products and exceptional customer service. As a company, Hy-Vee takes pride in fostering a workplace culture where employees are considered the company's greatest strength. The slogan, "a helpful smile in every aisle," reflects Hy-Vee's dedication to creating a friendly and welcoming shopping environment that continually supports both its customers and its team members. Hy-Vee is recognized for its community involvement, emphasis on teamwork, and focus on employee development, making it a desirable employer in the retail grocery sector. This particular opening is within the Asian department at a Hy-Vee store, offering a non-exempt, hourly position functionally dedicated to sushi preparation and customer service.

The Sushi Chef role at Hy-Vee holds significant importance as it directly impacts the customer's shopping experience by delivering fresh, high-quality sushi products. The primary responsibilities involve preparing and filling customer orders, ensuring the safe handling of food, and maintaining accurate inventory through ordering and receiving products correctly. Sushi Chefs at Hy-Vee must label items accurately with dates and properly store products, upholding food safety standards. Beyond food preparation, the role encompasses customer interaction, including greeting customers warmly, assisting with product inquiries, and fulfilling special orders with efficiency and enthusiasm. The Sushi Chef also plays a part in merchandising sushi foods and food layout, contributing to the presentation and attractiveness of the department.

Equipped with core competencies that include partnerships, a growth mindset, results orientation, customer focus, and professionalism, the Sushi Chef works closely with management and team members, including the Asian Department Manager and Sushi Clerks they may supervise. The position demands a balance between culinary skills and people skills – maintaining a clean, organized work area, adhering to company policies, and participating in scheduled food demonstrations or industry meetings. With one to three years of experience preferred and Hy-Vee's own food safety training, candidates must be Food Safety Certified, ensuring they meet regulatory standards. Physical stamina is essential given the demands of lifting, standing, and precise manual work involved in sushi preparation.

The Sushi Chef at Hy-Vee is not just a cook but a vital contributor to the overall shopping experience, emphasizing a commitment to excellent service and teamwork in a fast-paced retail environment. If you are passionate about sushi, enjoy engaging with customers, and wish to work for a company where your contributions matter, this position offers an excellent opportunity to grow professionally in a supportive setting.
