Job Description
OSF HealthCare Childrens Hospital of Illinois (CHOI) is a premier pediatric healthcare facility located in Peoria, Illinois. As the third largest children’s hospital in the state and the most comprehensive hospital for children in downstate Illinois, CHOI is renowned for providing specialized and compassionate care to a patient base of approximately 4.5 million individuals. This Level One trauma center, the only dedicated pediatric hospital within the OSF Healthcare system, operates with 136 beds and boasts over 140 pediatric subspecialists. The hospital handles a significant patient volume annually, including more than 7,000 inpatient admissions, 75,000 outpatient specialty visits, 2,400 newborn deliveries, and 18,000 emergency department visits. OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, the parent medical center hosting CHOI, is a leading tertiary and quaternary care institution with over 600 beds and more than 800 physicians on staff, supporting advanced medical care in the region.
The position available is for a Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgeon within the comprehensive Congenital Heart Center at CHOI. This accomplished program has a long-standing history of over 45 years of success, providing a full spectrum of pediatric cardiology services. The surgeon in this role is tasked with performing a variety of complex cardiac surgical procedures including primary repairs of congenital heart defects, valve repair and replacement, vascular reconstructions, and neonatal cardiac operations. In addition to surgical duties, the surgeon collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes pediatric ICU and critical care specialists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff, demonstrating a team-oriented approach to optimize patient outcomes and recovery.
This role is vital in ensuring effective coordination and communication between CHOI and a partner quaternary care institution, aligning shared clinical, research, and patient care priorities. The surgeon also supports education and mentorship activities involving fellows, residents, medical students, and other staff, and contributes to research and program development initiatives aimed at advancing pediatric cardiac care. CHOI’s Congenital Heart Center participates in prominent databases such as The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database and the World Database of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, and is an institutional member of the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society. The program holds a Center of Excellence Gold Level Certification from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization for ECMO services, underscoring its commitment to excellence. The hospital is also investing in a new Pediatric Specialty Care Center ambulatory building that will serve as the home for the Congenital Heart Center, reinforcing its growth and dedication to pediatric cardiac care.
Peoria itself offers a vibrant community with a metro population over 350,000 and a low cost of living. The city features a beautiful downtown area along the Illinois River, enriched with cultural and entertainment opportunities, and is home to several academic institutions including Bradley University and the University of Illinois College of Medicine. OSF HealthCare is dedicated to fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment, aligning with their mission of compassionate care and excellence in healthcare delivery. This position offers a competitive full-time clinical salary range of $650,000 to $800,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications, alongside a comprehensive benefits package that supports personal and professional growth.
