Job Description

Cal Poly Pomona Enterprises Employment Services operates under the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus. With a commitment to providing valuable work experience and hands-on training, the Foundation offers opportunities to approximately 1,500 students each year in diverse fields such as technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality management, leadership, and research grants. The Foundation is a vital contributor to campus life, supporting almost 1,100 Foundation and scholarship programs annually, including Bronco Athletics and the Norman J. Priest Scholarship. It also administers grants and contracts, enhances campus security, and supports university publications, contributing over $1 million annually to the university. As part of its employment services, Cal Poly Pomona Enterprises is dedicated to upholding a rich culture of learn-by-doing, where student employees acquire practical skills that prepare them for future careers.

The Food Service Supervisor role at Cal Poly Pomona Enterprises is a dynamic leadership position responsible for overseeing foodservice operations in various campus locations. Under the general supervision of the Manager or Assistant Manager, the Supervisor manages, assigns, and directs the work of a team to ensure accurate and efficient food service delivery. This role is instrumental in fostering a positive and uplifting experience for both customers and employees by maintaining high standards of service, safety, and hygiene.

Key responsibilities include planning and adjusting staffing levels, ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and Foundation standards, ordering and managing inventory, training and coaching staff, maintaining sanitation and organization, and resolving equipment or facility issues. This position requires direct interaction with customers and vendors to address and resolve complaints, ensuring timely communication of schedules and accurate time recording. Supervisors must uphold cash register and credit card policies and are accountable for the punctuality, uniform, and preparedness of staff. They also attend meetings, prepare reports, and maintain professional and respectful communication within the workplace. The Supervisor must be knowledgeable in safety protocols, including accident and injury reporting, and may be involved in food and beverage preparation.

Supervision extends beyond staff to include oversight of contracted personnel providing custodial, landscaping, trash collection, pest control, and facility repair services. The Supervisor holds responsibility for the performance and conduct of all subordinates, providing feedback to improve work quality. This role demands flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs dictate, adaptability to changing schedules and technologies, and a strong commitment to teamwork in a diverse environment.

This position requires a minimum high school diploma or equivalent and significant supervisory experience in a high-volume foodservice operation. Certification such as Servsafe Manager is mandatory, and excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills are essential. The ideal candidate is resourceful, proactive, able to apply policies appropriately, and committed to the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Preferred qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts, Management, Business, or related fields, and experience supervising in a university foodservice context. The Cal Poly Pomona Foundation promotes an inclusive workplace with reasonable accommodations for disabilities and a firm commitment to safety, including a background check process and COVID-19 vaccination recommendations.
