Job Description

The City of Abilene is seeking a dedicated and experienced Supervisor III - Food Services to manage and oversee the food preparation, purchases, catering, and transportation functions within the Division of Recreation and Senior Services. As a municipal entity, the City of Abilene is committed to providing exceptional community services that enhance the quality of life for its residents. The Division of Recreation and Senior Services plays a critical role in offering varied programming and events designed to serve diverse populations, including seniors who benefit from specialized nutrition services.

This full-time role involves substantial responsibility under the supervision of the Division Manager - Recreation/Senior Services. The Supervisor III is tasked with leading daily kitchen operations, including menu development, food preparation, presentation, and maintaining strict adherence to health and safety standards. A key function of this position is managing the procurement process for all kitchen-related products, overseeing inventories, and ensuring that the facility meets all regulatory requirements from local, state, and federal agencies regarding food service and delivery. The position also includes overseeing logistics such as catering setup, takedown, and transportation for various division events and programs.

A successful candidate will be responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, managing, scheduling, and directing kitchen and transportation employees. Strong leadership and personnel management skills are crucial as the Supervisor III must ensure team adherence to city policies, food handling protocols, and exceptional customer service standards. This position requires a proactive individual who can develop and implement systems to prevent loss and inefficiency, as well as create detailed reports on food costs, employee safety, and operational performance.

The role demands an advanced ability to utilize technology platforms relevant to food or recreation management, proficiency in financial management tasks including invoice processing and budget monitoring, and adeptness in handling personnel issues with diplomacy. Additionally, driving responsibilities require safe operation of a motor vehicle for transporting food and equipment to various recreation centers, parks, and event locations.

Candidates must demonstrate leadership and initiative in a fast-paced, diverse team environment while communicating effectively with internal and external customers. An emphasis is placed on embodying the City of Abilene's Core Values: Respect, Integrity, Service Above Self, and Excellence in All We Do. This role offers a challenging yet rewarding opportunity to contribute to a vital city division dedicated to community health and well-being, including special nutritional support for seniors.

Employment for this position includes a valid Texas driver’s license (or ability to obtain within 90 days), current First Aid/CPR certification, and food safety certifications relevant to the supervisory level. The Supervisor III Food Services role requires at least five years of large-scale food service experience in a supervisory capacity, five years of purchasing experience, and advanced certification such as Certified Dietary Manager and Certified Food Protection Professional or the ability to obtain these within 90 days of employment.

This job not only complements a career in public service but also offers the chance to lead a dedicated team in delivering high-quality food services that support the recreational and nutritional needs of the Abilene community.
