Job Description
The San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School (SJCC+CS) is one of the pioneering urban conservation corps in the United States, established in 1987. This organization is dedicated to empowering young adults aged 18 to 27, referred to as "Corpsmembers," by providing them with opportunities to upskill themselves and advance their careers primarily in conservation and green spaces. SJCC+CS operates a comprehensive, one-year paid workforce development program that combines hands-on work experience with educational pursuits. In addition, it functions as a WASC-accredited charter high school, offering a unique pathway for students who have aged out of the traditional education system to earn their high school diplomas. This dual focus on education and workforce readiness places SJCC+CS at the forefront of social and environmental change, supporting youth while addressing critical urban and ecological challenges.
SJCC+CS offers a work environment that is engaging and focused on growth, teamwork, and making a positive community impact. The culture values collaboration, respect for diverse perspectives, and providing employees the opportunity to contribute their skills toward creating a hopeful and sustainable community. Whether your passion lies in education and development, environmental conservation, or community engagement, joining SJCC+CS means embracing a shared commitment to service and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of urban youth and the broader community. The organization’s mission revolves around creating transformational change through skill-building, leadership development, and environmental stewardship. Learn more about their initiatives and impact at www.sjcccs.org.
The Zero Waste Silicon Valley program, a specialized arm within SJCC+CS, tackles two of California’s significant societal issues concurrently: overcoming systemic employment barriers for transition-age youth and reducing the environmental impact of waste disposal, which amounts to 30 million tons annually in California alone. This program provides participants with technical training in essential skills like forklift operation, e-waste processing, and critical interpersonal competencies such as conflict management and communication. The operational projects within Zero Waste Silicon Valley focus on landfill diversion, public education, outreach, and more, making important strides toward sustainability.
The Zero Waste Supervisor I position is a vital operational and leadership role within the Zero Waste program. The supervisor is responsible for mentoring, overseeing, and leading a crew of Corpsmembers, ensuring that work plan goals for projects and events are effectively executed. The role involves engaging the public and building strong relationships with stakeholders in the Zero Waste industry, thereby furthering the program's mission and outreach.
This full-time position offers a competitive salary ranging from $29.50 to $32.64 per hour, dependent on relevant experience and education. Employment benefits include a 403(b) retirement plan with employer matching after one year of service, medical, dental, vision, life, and pet insurance, as well as holiday, vacation, and sick pay. Additional benefits include credit union membership, an employee assistance program, education assistance, and a subsidized annual Eco Pass, all designed to support employee wellness and professional growth.
The Zero Waste Supervisor I position demands strong leadership skills, a commitment to safety, and a passion for environmental conservation and youth development. Candidates must be prepared to manage daily operations, ensure safety protocols, maintain detailed records, and cultivate a positive, inclusive workplace culture that emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion. The position also involves managing logistical aspects such as vehicle inspections and warehouse coordination, reinforcing the holistic responsibility of the role. Beyond operational duties, the supervisor actively contributes to fostering a supportive and professional environment where all staff and Corpsmembers feel safe, respected, and valued.
Joining San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School as a Zero Waste Supervisor I means becoming part of a team dedicated to environmental sustainability and the empowerment of urban youth through hands-on work, education, and career development. This role offers a meaningful opportunity to lead impactful projects that benefit both the community and the environment while advancing your career in a purpose-driven organization.
