Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a prestigious biomedical research institution located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. This world-renowned laboratory has significantly influenced contemporary biomedical research and is recognized as the home of eight Nobel Prize laureates. The laboratory offers a vibrant and collaborative research environment, fostering innovation and advancements across various biomedical fields. In addition to its research activities, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory hosts the renowned Meetings and Courses program, which facilitates interaction among international researchers and provides exposure to cutting-edge scientific developments. This institution is committed to inclusivity and diversity, welcoming researchers with diverse backgrounds from around the globe and emphasizing the belief that science is for everyone.
The Supervisor of Events position at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a full-time role located at 1 Bungtown Road, Cold Spring Harbor - Main Campus. This position offers an hourly wage range of $20.52 to $23.07, reflecting competitive compensation aligned with the applicant's experience, education, and other relevant qualifications. As a Supervisor of Events, you will be instrumental in managing and executing a variety of events tied to the laboratory’s core programs, including Meetings, Courses, Administrative, Communications, and Development-related functions.
In this critical supervisory role within the Culinary Services process level, the selected candidate will oversee the entire event lifecycle: from setup through maintenance to breakdown. Your responsibilities will extend to managing events both on and off-campus, ensuring seamless execution and high-quality service. The role also involves providing event services at the residences of key institutional leaders such as the President, Chancellor Emeritus, and Cancer Center Director, highlighting the importance of discretion and professionalism.
You will be responsible for procuring and organizing necessary supplies for various events, which might include breakfasts, lunches, dinners, receptions, banquets, barbecues, and high-profile VIP functions. Managing event staff is a significant component of the position, where you will assign responsibilities, supervise, and provide training and development opportunities to a seasonal team ranging between 20 to 30 employees. Serving as a liaison with event contacts when needed and offering operational support to the events office team, including performance feedback and event analysis, are also key duties.
The position requires flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays in response to the demands and seasonal fluctuations of the department's event calendar. Additionally, the supervisor will occasionally serve as a barista at the coffee bar and hillside café during staff absences, underscoring the role's hands-on nature.
Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of culinary service procedures, including serving and sanitation standards, and demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. The position demands a professional demeanor, the ability to tactfully resolve customer inquiries, and the competence to interact effectively with a diverse group of individuals across cultural and professional lines. Familiarity with the laboratory’s various campus facilities and possessing certifications such as Nassau County sanitation and NYS alcoholic beverage service training (TIPS preferred) will be advantageous.
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory offers a supportive work environment with a comprehensive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, wellness programs, and an on-site childcare center. Joining the laboratory means becoming part of a dynamic team that values your contribution to advancing science and ensuring successful event delivery. This is a unique career opportunity to work at a globally respected institution with a commitment to excellence and community support.
