Job Description
California Medical Facility (CMF) is a state-of-the-art correctional institution located in Vacaville, Solano County, California. CMF is situated in a unique geographical position surrounded by numerous recreational and tourist attractions, making it a distinguished facility within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) system. It lies approximately 35 miles east of downtown Sacramento and about 53 miles west of San Francisco's popular Pier 39, with Napa Valley just 30 miles to the west. This prime location offers staff the chance to experience a blend of urban, suburban, and rural environments and access to family-friendly and outdoor activities. CMF provides a safe, secure, and humane environment focused on rehabilitation, treatment, and restoring individuals within their care to become healthy and employable members of society. The facility emphasizes collaborative efforts with government agencies, healthcare partners, and communities to support public safety and community reentry programs.
The Supervising Correctional Cook (SCC) is a vital leadership role within CMF's Food Services Department. Reporting directly to the Correctional Food Manager and Assistant Correctional Food Manager, the SCC oversees the daily operations of the Main Kitchen, ensuring all meals are prepared, cooked, and served according to rigorous quality and quantity standards set forth by the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. These standards are aligned with several key directives, including the American Correctional Association (ACA) standards, the Food Manager's Handbook, California Department of Corrections Manual sections, and Title 15 regulations.
This full-time position is designated as a 12-month limited-term assignment with a possibility of extension up to 24 months or transition to a permanent role based on performance and departmental needs. The monthly salary range for this position is $5,293 to $6,621, with new state employees placed at the minimum salary for the classification or an applicable alternate range. The SCC is instrumental in enforcing work incentive programs for incarcerated workers, monitoring staff attendance, overseeing food and supply ordering processes, and conducting weekly quality inspections within all Food Services areas. The role demands a hands-on management style, including conducting training sessions for both staff and incarcerated persons, menu planning, recipe development, and when necessary, implementing disciplinary actions.
The position requires a strong commitment to California's public safety vision and mission, which promote successful community reintegration through education, treatment, and restorative justice programs. CDCR and CMF foster an inclusive and culturally diverse workplace built on integrity, creativity, fairness, and respect. Employees in this role will engage cooperatively with internal teams and external stakeholders to advance the department's goals while adhering to safety protocols, professional standards, and the values of equity and human dignity. The position is based onsite at CMF in Vacaville, with free parking available for all employees. Candidates will be expected to undergo background investigations, including Live Scan fingerprinting and tuberculosis testing, prior to appointment.
Overall, the Supervising Correctional Cook position offers a challenging yet rewarding opportunity for individuals passionate about food service management within a correctional setting and dedicated to contributing to the rehabilitation mission of CDCR. This role demands strong supervisory skills, operational expertise, and a commitment to upholding regulations governing food service in secure environments while promoting workforce development and engagement among staff and incarcerated workers.
