Job Description

The Seattle Human Services Department (HSD) is committed to fostering strong, healthy communities by connecting people with essential resources and solutions during times of need. With a clear focus on racial equity, HSD supports various initiatives and policies aimed at six key impact areas: preparing youth for success; fostering affordability and livability; addressing homelessness; promoting public health; responding to gender-based violence; and encouraging healthy aging. This comprehensive approach demonstrates the City's dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all residents.

One of the vital programs under HSD is the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which provides nutritious meals to youth aged 1-18 in low-income communities across Seattle. Funded federally through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), this initiative ensures that children and youth have access to free, wholesome meals and snacks during the summer months when school is not in session. The program operates across approximately 100 locations in Seattle, including playgrounds, community centers, library branches, summer schools, youth clubs, cultural organizations, and housing communities. The purpose of SFSP is not only to address food insecurity but also to connect youth with meaningful academic and cultural activities during the summer.

The role of Summer Food Service Program Delivery Driver is a crucial part of this extensive network. This position involves the daily delivery of meals from the Seattle School District Central Kitchen to various sites throughout the city. It is a full-time summer role running from approximately June 10 through August 25, 2026, with typical working hours from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The position demands punctuality, attention to detail, and the ability to work without scheduled days off during the program period.

Candidates will be responsible for operating a city-issued vehicle safely along pre-assigned routes, ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and shelf-stable meals to designated sites. In addition to meal delivery, duties include transporting program materials such as banners and sandwich boards, maintaining accurate records of meal counts, and occasionally assisting program monitors with paperwork. This is a physically active role, requiring the ability to stand, walk, bend for extended periods, and lift packages weighing up to 50 pounds. Employees must also be prepared to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

The position requires a solid understanding of Seattle's geography and roads, a relatively clean driving record, and the capacity to work collaboratively with program staff, school district personnel, and site personnel. The work environment is dynamic and community-centered, providing an opportunity to be directly involved in serving diverse populations and supporting a valuable public service. While this job is not eligible for benefits, it offers meaningful engagement in community service, an active outdoor work atmosphere, and a competitive hourly wage ranging from $27.92 to $32.47.

In summary, the SFSP Delivery Driver role is an energetic, community-focused summer opportunity essential to the successful operation of Seattle's Summer Food Service Program. It offers individuals a chance to contribute positively to youth nutrition and community well-being while developing valuable skills in logistics, time management, and customer service. This position is ideal for those who enjoy being on the move, working independently and as part of a team, and engaging with the community in meaningful ways.
