Job Description

Eaton County Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a dedicated and experienced Summer Camp Director for their seasonal summer camp program in Grand Ledge, Michigan. Eaton County Parks & Recreation is known for providing quality recreational programs and services to enhance the lives of community members through diverse recreational activities, environmental education, and community engagement. This seasonal position, offering an hourly wage range of $17.48 to $22.71, plays a critical role in overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of the summer camp, ensuring a safe, educational, and enjoyable environment for youth campers. The position is seasonal with continuous recruitment and typically requires a 40-hour workweek while programming is running, with varying hours as necessary.

The Summer Camp Director works under the supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director, Deputy Director, and the Recreation & Events Coordinator to develop, implement, and manage the summer camp programs. This role involves not only managing camp staff but also communicating consistently with parents, guardians, teachers, and all camp personnel to provide a smooth program flow and high-quality experience. Responsibilities include developing camp policies, creating camp packets, conducting staff training, managing behavioral issues, and overseeing the general health, safety, and welfare of campers. This leadership position requires someone who can motivate and supervise a team, has knowledge of youth development, safety regulations, and holds certifications such as Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED, and First Aid.

In essence, the Summer Camp Director is expected to facilitate a positive summer camp experience by ensuring well-organized activities, overseeing staff performance, and maintaining thorough communication with families and the community. The role also includes logistical planning for weekly trips, ongoing staff development, and conducting annual camp reviews. The successful candidate must be physically capable of managing outdoor activities, walking on uneven terrain, lifting heavy objects, and must possess a valid Michigan Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record. Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • supervisory experience
  • must have current Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED and First Aid Certification prior to camp start
  • must possess valid Michigan Driver's license and satisfactory driving record
  • ability to regularly travel to various park locations
  • ability to walk over uneven terrain
  • ability to sit, kneel, stoop, stand, walk, climb and lift up to 75 pounds
  • ability to work in office settings and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions
  • seasonal temporary position with at-will employment terms

Job Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • supervisory experience
  • college level coursework in elementary or secondary education is a plus
  • previous experience in a camp setting or teaching is preferred
  • current Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED and First Aid Certification prior to camp start (certification training provided if necessary)
  • knowledge of development needs of youth

Job Duties

  • Develop camp policies and procedures in conjunction with the Deputy Director and Recreation & Events Coordinator
