Job Description
Mandarin Oriental New York, part of the prestigious Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, is an iconic luxury hotel located in the heart of Manhattan. We are currently seeking a Substitute Utility Steward to join our esteemed Stewarding team at the Mandarin Oriental New York within the Culinary and Food & Beverage Department. This role is essential in maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and organization in our kitchen and food service areas. The Substitute Utility Steward will be responsible for a variety of tasks including pot and dish washing, garbage and box removal, silver polishing, sweeping, mopping, and cleaning kitchen coolers and surrounding areas. Flexibility, a positive attitude, and a willingness to assist in kitchen plating when necessary are fundamental attributes for success in this role.

The Substitute Utility Steward contributes to the overall mission and goals of the stewarding department by ensuring all equipment such as china, glassware, and silverware are inventoried and properly distributed to outlets and banquet events. Adhering to cleaning and maintenance schedules, assisting the kitchen staff, and ensuring hygiene and control within the kitchen area are also key responsibilities. The role involves active communication with supervisors and colleagues, maintaining training standards, and supporting event functions with necessary equipment and assistance.
This position offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $30.46 to $40.62, commensurate with experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- completion of two current sanitation classes
- at least one year experience in food and beverage or cleaning services
- friendly and outgoing personality
- knowledge of stewarding and banquet operations
- strong organizational skills
- attention to detail and multitasking ability
- patience and ability to work under pressure
- ability to stand or walk for 8 to 12 hours
- frequent lifting or carrying of up to 20 pounds
- occasional lifting or carrying up to 100 pounds
- frequent bending and squatting
- occasional kneeling, climbing, reaching above shoulders and repetitive hand motions
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- two up to date sanitation classes
- minimum of 1 year experience in food and beverage or other professional cleaning business
- possess a pleasant and outgoing personality
- good knowledge of stewarding and banquet operations
- possess superior organization skills
- ability to pay attention to detail, handle multiple tasks and show a high level of patience
- ability to work under high stress conditions
- stand/walk 8 - 12 hours a day
- ability to lift or carry 0-20 pounds frequently
- ability to lift or carry 21-50 pounds occasionally
- ability to lift or carry 51-100 pounds occasionally
- ability to bend, squat frequently
- ability to kneel, climb, reach above shoulders and perform repetitive hand motions frequently
Job Duties
- Follow the goals and missions for the stewarding department
- help to do the inventory of china, glasses, silver and hollowware from the outlets and the main storage
- provide enough equipment (china, glasses, silver) to the outlets and banquets for the operations
- follow the cleaning schedule for the kitchen, pastry, garden manger, banquets, cafeteria and coolers
- follow the weekly schedule for the employees
- help kitchens whenever necessary
- do and follow the requisition for banquets from the B.E.Os
- follow the cleaning schedule for the dumpster
- follow the maintenance schedule for the dishwasher machines
- assist and provide the equipment for any banquets function
- assist and help banquets kitchen colleagues to plate up
- follow the hygiene and control program for the kitchen and surround areas
- develop and follow the training program for stewards
- follow the standard and procedures for department
- establish a good communication with the supervisor and colleagues
