Job Description
This job opportunity is with a school district, an organization dedicated to providing a safe, clean, and healthy environment for students, staff, and the community. The school district maintains multiple facilities including classrooms, offices, multi-purpose rooms, gyms, laboratories, and outdoor areas that require professional cleaning and maintenance services. The Custodian position is a service-level role that directly contributes to maintaining the district's facilities to ensure they are safe and welcoming for all users. The position reports under the supervision of the principal or assigned administrator, and follows the direction of the Plant Manager and/or Lead Custodian. The Custodian plays a critical role in upholding the district’s standards for cleanliness, hygiene, and maintenance, which are essential for fostering a productive educational environment. The salary for this position ranges under Step 1 of the district’s salary schedule, which reflects its classification within the school district's pay structure.
The role of the Custodian involves a diverse range of responsibilities focused on cleaning, disinfecting, maintaining, and making minor repairs in various parts of the district’s property. These tasks are vital in preventing health hazards and ensuring that facilities operate smoothly and efficiently. Custodians are expected to perform their duties with general supervision while adhering to safety protocols such as proper use of cleaning chemicals, personal protective equipment, and handling of potentially hazardous materials. In addition, custodians must be capable of operating and maintaining custodial tools and equipment safely and effectively. Collaboration and good communication skills are key, as custodians interact with a diverse population, including staff, students, and external visitors. They must also be able to respond to and report maintenance needs or safety concerns promptly to their supervisors. This dynamic role includes participating in event setup and breakdown, pest control monitoring, routine safety checks, and maintaining an organized inventory of custodial supplies. Custodians must demonstrate flexibility to work various shifts and adapt to different cleaning and maintenance challenges as they arise. Overall, this position requires attention to detail, physical stamina, a customer-service oriented mindset, and a commitment to supporting the school district's mission by contributing to safe and well-maintained educational facilities.

Job Requirements
- high school diploma or equivalent
- some experience in custodial work preferred
- ability to perform manual tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs and carrying up to 75 lbs
- ability to work indoors and outdoors under varying environmental conditions
- ability to follow safety procedures and use personal protective equipment
- willingness to work various shifts including evenings and weekends when required
- ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers
- attention to detail and reliability
Job Qualifications
- high school diploma or equivalent
- some experience in custodial work
- basic knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, tools and equipment
- ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs
- understanding of work hazards, safety techniques and use of personal protective equipment

- basic reading and writing skills to document work

- physical ability to lift, carry, push and pull heavy items

Job Duties
- clean and disinfect assigned district facilities including restrooms, indoor and outdoor entry areas, classrooms, offices, stairways, floors, laboratories and other assigned areas
- maintain indoor and outdoor areas by removing trash and waste, cleaning trash receptacles and replacing liners
- maintain cleanliness of flooring by sweeping, mopping, and spot cleaning hard floors and baseboards and vacuuming and spot cleaning carpeted surfaces
- adhere to assigned maintenance schedule for major cleaning projects including carpet cleaning, floor stripping and refinishing
- monitor facilities for pest and rodent infestations and take action for minor infestations or inform lead custodian and/or plant manager about major infestations
- inspect equipment and facilities regularly for function and required servicing and make minor repairs such as light bulb or lamp replacement, door handle, light switch or plate repair, soap dispenser replacement, and arrange for complex repairs
- participate in setup and takedown of seating and equipment for events including theater, athletic fields, multi-purpose room and/or gymnasium use
- maintain a secure environment by securing doors, ensuring windows and lights are locked and off, respond to fire alarms and inspect lifts as assigned
- adhere to safety protocols including proper labeling of secondary containers, following safety data sheets (SDS), and use of personal protective equipment
- maintain appropriate stocking of custodial supplies, replenish soap, towel and toilet paper in restrooms, and inform plant manager or lead custodian about supply shortages
- report work activities and unanticipated occurrences to lead, plant manager and/or assigned administrator
- perform other duties as assigned that support position objectives
