Job Description

This employment opportunity is with a school district seeking a Substitute Bus Driver to join their transportation team. The transportation department plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and timely conveyance of students between home and school. Job Requirements

  • Required to stand, sit, walk and use hands and arms continuously in controlling the steering wheel of the bus
  • Ability to continuously use hand and arm strength to grasp and secure emergency brake and control the steering wheel
  • Must frequently bend, squat and twist neck and trunk
  • Ability to frequently move or lift up to 50 pounds in assisting children into booster or car seats
  • Must be able to go up and down bus steps repeatedly without restrictions
  • Must have specific vision abilities including close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to move the leg quickly from the gas pedal to the brake without restrictions
  • Must be able to move on and off the bus quickly and without restrictions
  • Must be able to project voice loudly but in control for giving clear instructions

Job Qualifications

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License
  • Ability to operate an automatic or stick shift vehicle
  • Capability to use all manual equipment inside the bus including manual door, stick shift, and brake
  • Must be able to climb steps and move quickly without restrictions to the back of the bus during a bus evacuation
  • Minimum safe driving experience as determined by the board
  • Sufficient mechanical aptitude to diagnose minor problems and perform appropriate repairs
  • Capacity to control emotions and maintain passenger discipline to ensure safety
  • Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
  • No visual or perceptual problems that could interfere with bus operation or safety

Job Duties

  • Conducts a pre-trip safety inspection of the bus prior to every trip and completes the School Bus Condition Report
  • Notifies transportation supervisor of any mechanical malfunctions and/or safety hazards
  • Adheres to established routes, designated bus stops and keeps to assigned time schedule
  • Transports only authorized pupils
  • Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory school bus safety regulations
  • Maintains discipline on the bus and reports violations to the building principal or other authorized individual
  • Reports all accidents and pupil injuries immediately to the principal and the school business administrator and completes required reports
