Job Description

The Oregon School for the Deaf, a specialized educational institution dedicated to serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students, is seeking to hire multiple Student Food Service Workers for the 2025-2026 academic school year. As part of the Oregon Department of Education, the school provides comprehensive support and resources tailored to the unique needs of its students, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. This position is open exclusively to students currently enrolled at the Oregon School for the Deaf, highlighting the institution's commitment to creating student employment opportunities that contribute to personal growth and campus community engagement. The employment type for this role is part-time and the position is scheduled throughout the school year. The hourly wage ranges from $21.38 to $24.27 before PERS (Public Employee Retirement System) contributions, with salaries adjusted accordingly based on PERS participation. Candidates should be aware that participation in PERS involves a 6% employee payroll contribution and results in a base salary increase of 6.95%.

The role of a Student Food Service Worker involves performing a variety of essential routine food service activities designed to support the efficient operation of the school’s dining services. Responsibilities include washing dishes, pots, and pans; setting up condiments and food pans; preparing food trays; serving on food lines; and clearing and maintaining cleanliness of tables, counters, and serving areas. Workers are also expected to assist in the operation of the dish machine and the maintenance of the dish room. Given the nature of the role, candidates must follow state safety and sanitation regulations rigorously to ensure food service standards are consistently met. The schedule requires flexibility, as working hours may vary from day to day, tailored to the school’s needs throughout the academic calendar.

Successful candidates will demonstrate dependability and punctuality, as well as skill in handling materials and equipment commonly used in dining or food service settings. Holding a current Oregon Food Handler's Card is mandatory for this position, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. Preference may be given to candidates who have at least six months of prior experience in a food service facility. The Oregon School for the Deaf emphasizes equal opportunity and is committed to fostering diversity and inclusivity in its workforce. Applicants are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every qualification listed, and support is available for those wishing to discuss their application or qualifications further. Student Food Service Workers are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which advocates for fair labor practices and employee rights within the school system. Communication with applicants and employees is conducted primarily via the Workday account, requiring all applicants to maintain a valid e-mail address.
