Job Description

The University of Rochester, a distinguished educational institution located in Rochester, New York, is well-known for its deep commitment to excellence and its philosophy of Meliora, meaning Ever Better. This commitment extends beyond academics to creating a community defined by shared values such as equity, leadership, integrity, openness, respect, and accountability. The University continuously strives to maintain a welcoming environment where everyone – staff, students, and faculty – can thrive and contribute to its dynamic academic and social community. As one of the leading universities in the United States, it offers not only an inspiring place to work but also a chance to be part of a mission that emphasizes learning, discovery, healing, creativity, and making the world a better place.

The University of Rochester is currently seeking dedicated individuals for temporary Kitchen, Culinary, Daily Staff, and Catering positions at its River Campus and Eastman Downtown dining locations. These roles provide essential support to Campus Dining services, catering to the needs of staff, students, and the wider university community. Working within one of the three dining halls on the River Campus or the Eastman Dining Hall, individuals in this role will experience a fast-paced, team-oriented environment that is integral to the daily operation of the campus's food service.

Employees can expect shifts varying from early mornings starting at 6 am to late-night hours ending at midnight, with shifts lasting up to 8 hours. This flexibility suits a range of schedules, allowing candidates to find shifts that align with their availability. Compensation for these roles is competitive, ranging from $18 to $19 per hour, with potential raises after 90 days of temporary employment upon union membership. This reflects the university's commitment to fair and equitable pay, taking into consideration the employee's education, experience, and qualifications.

In this role, duties include preparing sandwiches and hot meals, cleaning tables, washing dishes, and serving members of the university community. The position requires a candidate to have a working knowledge of food preparation methods and the ability to work with minimal supervision, following oral and written instructions accurately. Physical stamina is necessary, as the job entails lifting items weighing between 40 to 50 pounds. Additionally, this role is an excellent opportunity for individuals with prior food service experience—including sautéing, grilling, and food prep—to contribute their skills in a supportive, inclusive community setting.

The University of Rochester emphasizes an inclusive hiring process and encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds, including those with a criminal record. The university is committed to non-discrimination on many protected grounds, ensuring a supportive experience for all applicants. Interested candidates can look forward to a workplace that offers employee assistance programs, discounts, flexible scheduling, and meal provisions, contributing to a positive and accommodating work environment. Overall, this opportunity offers more than a job: it is a chance to play a vital role in the university’s daily operations, supporting the campus’s vibrant community while developing culinary and hospitality skills in a respected academic setting.
