The Sr Sterile Processing Technician position at Houston Methodist is a crucial role within the Surgical Services department, responsible for maintaining stringent standards related to the decontamination, assembly, inspection, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This position plays a pivotal role in supporting the Operating Room (OR) by ensuring that sterile products, surgical trays, and case carts are prepared efficiently and delivered timely, contributing directly to the smooth functioning of surgical procedures. As a senior technician, the individual is expected to have advanced expertise in sterilization techniques, a thorough understanding of surgical instruments, and how the Sterile Processing department interfaces with multiple hospital units. This role demands a certified professional who is proficient in the latest sterilization methods, including steam, ethylene oxide (ETO), and low-temperature hydrogen peroxide sterilization processes.

The technician acts as a liaison between the Sterile Processing department and the OR staff, maintaining consistent workflow and excellent communication to support patient safety and operational efficiency. This role also involves mentoring and educating team members, participating in quality improvement efforts, and ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements. The position requires adherence to universal precautions and safety protocols to protect staff and patients alike. Additionally, the senior technician contributes to departmental growth through involvement in shared governance, ongoing education, and continuous professional development.

This is a non-exempt evening shift role which emphasizes teamwork, customer service, and a strong commitment to patient care. Job Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent
Two years of sterile processing experience
Sterile Processing certification: CRCST or CSPDT
Demonstrated skills to safely perform assigned duties
Proficiency in English communication
Ability to wear appropriate protective attire
Strong team player and customer service focus
Basic computer skills
Problem-solving and critical thinking ability
Proper phone etiquette

Job Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent education
Two years of sterile processing experience
Sterile Processing certification such as CRCST or CSPDT
Demonstrated proficiency in sterilization techniques and surgical instrument handling
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Knowledge of safety procedures and universal precautions
Competency in basic computer programs including Microsoft Office
Experience in mentoring and coaching staff
Ability to maintain consistent workflow under pressure

Job Duties

Maintain high standards for decontamination, assembly, inspecting, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment
Work in conjunction with Operating Room staff to provide timely sterile products, trays, and case carts
Maintain consistent and continuous workflow between OR and Sterile Processing
Practice excellent customer service toward patients, physicians, and co-workers
Serve as preceptor and mentor to staff and students
Participate in department improvement activities and quality assurance processes
Perform sterilization using advanced techniques such as steam, ETO, and hydrogen peroxide
Identify and prioritize sterile products based on surgery schedules
Promote a positive work environment and team collaboration
Manage departmental resources efficiently and identify cost-saving measures
Follow safety protocols including Universal Precautions and appropriate protective attire
Use computer systems to track instruments and trays
Demonstrate problem-solving and critical thinking skills
Provide training and educational presentations within the department
Participate in Shared Governance and organizational committees
