The Sr Sterile Processing Technician position at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital plays a vital role in maintaining the highest standards of infection control and surgical support. This role is primarily responsible for the decontamination, assembly, inspection, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment necessary for Surgical Services and ancillary departments. The position requires working closely with the Operating Room (OR) staff to ensure timely provision of sterile products, trays, and case carts, supporting a seamless and efficient surgical workflow.

As an evening shift non-exempt role, the Sr Sterile Processing Technician must be certified, demonstrating advanced knowledge of sterilization techniques, surgical instruments, and the intricate functioning of the Sterile Processing department and its interactions within the hospital system. The technician ensures continuous workflow between the OR and Sterile Processing department while upholding excellent customer service for patients, physicians, and healthcare teams.

Beyond basic sterilization tasks, this senior role includes responsibilities such as mentoring and training staff, participating in departmental improvement initiatives, and utilizing various sterilization processes including steam, ethylene oxide (ETO), and low-temperature hydrogen peroxide methods. The role demands a strong commitment to safety protocols, detailed understanding of cleaning agents and sterilization equipment, and skillful management of instruments according to institutional guidelines.

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education
  • Two years of sterile processing experience
  • Sterile Processing certification (CRCST or CSPDT)
  • Ability to safely perform assigned job duties as demonstrated through skills assessments and evaluations
  • Proficiency in English language for communication impacting patient and employee safety
  • Ability to effectively communicate with various stakeholders
  • Follow Universal Precautions
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Ability to use basic computer programs and electronic tracking systems

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to utilize basic computer programs such as Microsoft Office and electronic instrument tracking systems
  • Demonstrate problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
  • Follow Universal Precautions and use appropriate protective attire
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching staff
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques and surgical instruments

Job Duties

  • Maintain high standards for decontamination, assembly, inspecting, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment
  • Work in conjunction with Operating Room (OR) staff to provide timely sterile products, trays and case carts
  • Promote a positive work environment and collaborate with healthcare team
  • Serve as a preceptor and implement staff education
  • Perform decontamination and assemble complex surgical trays and customized instrumentation
  • Function independently to sterilize instruments and surgical trays following manufacturer instructions and institutional policies
  • Review and improve sterilization process effectiveness using monitoring systems
  • Manage time efficiently to minimize incidental overtime
  • Utilize department resources to ensure completeness of trays and instruments according to count sheets
  • Perform, train, and mentor industry sterile processing standards including steam, ETO, and low-temperature hydrogen peroxide
  • Participate in department improvement activities and Shared Governance committees
