Job Description

Mecklenburg County is a vibrant and diverse community located in North Carolina, known for its commitment to fostering inclusive growth, exceptional public services, and a high quality of life for its residents. The county spans over 523 square miles and encompasses the City of Charlotte, six towns, and numerous unincorporated areas with a population exceeding one million. Mecklenburg County prioritizes community engagement, sustainability, and innovative recreational opportunities to inspire a healthy, active, and connected populace. The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department (MCPRD) plays a critical role in enhancing the lives of residents by managing more than 21,000 acres that include over 230 parks, nature preserves, greenways, and facilities. MCPRD is highly regarded for its cutting-edge programs, state-of-the-art facilities, and impactful partnerships, positioning it as a leader in the field of public recreation on both local and national scales.

The department organizes numerous community events such as the Hummingbird Festival, the Senior Games, and Festival in the Park, making it a cornerstone of community culture and engagement. Recognized for providing safe and exciting amenities, MCPRD also addresses fitness and health improvements that reduce healthcare costs, contributing to overall well-being and raising property values through quality recreational spaces. Its stewardship efforts protect open spaces and natural areas preserving the treasured tree canopy that defines Mecklenburg County's landscape.

The Sr Stadium and Venue Operations Manager position within MCPRD offers an exceptional career opportunity to lead the operations of two significant venues: the American Legion Memorial Stadium and the Grady Cole Civic Center. These facilities, located near uptown Charlotte and adjacent to Central Piedmont Community College, serve as major cultural and sporting hubs with a renovated 9,300-seat stadium and an attached 2,000-seat civic center. The venues host a range of events including festivals, concerts, professional and collegiate sports, notably the Men’s and Women’s ACC Lacrosse Championships, and are home to professional sports teams such as Charlotte Independence (Men’s Soccer), Anthem RC (Men’s Rugby), and Carolina Ascent FC (Women’s Soccer).

This full-time role manages all aspects of facility operations, encompassing maintenance program development, equipment management, contract oversight, staff supervision, fiscal planning, and event day logistics. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with County standards, oversee safety training programs, and deliver outstanding customer service. Due to the event schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, flexibility in working hours is essential. This role offers a competitive annual salary ranging from $57,346 to $75,266.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of six years of experience in recreation programming with at least one year of supervisory experience or equivalent training. A Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration, Park and Recreation, or a related field is required. Preferences include experience with synthetic turf maintenance, arena or stadium operations, athletic field painting, and digital scoreboard systems like Daktronics. Strong leadership, contract management, fiscal oversight, and multiple task management capabilities are critical to success. The position offers a chance to contribute to the community by enhancing recreational experiences and operational excellence in prominent county venues.
