Job Description
Leon County Government is a well-established public sector entity committed to providing high-quality services to its community. The Department of Public Works, responsible for maintaining vital infrastructure and ensuring the welfare of the residents, operates with a strong focus on efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Located at 2280 Miccosukee Rd., Tallahassee, FL, this office serves as a hub for various operational divisions, including the crucial Stormwater Maintenance division. As a government agency, it offers career service full-time opportunities with competitive salary ranges and excellent benefits packages tailored to meet employee needs and foster career growth. The role detailed here is under the PW Stormwater Maintenance division, emphasizing specialized, hands-on work with important environmental and public safety impacts. The advertised salary range for this position spans from $35,630.40 to $58,780.80 annually, with starting placement typically not exceeding 15% above the minimum salary, subject to qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.
This position involves comprehensive manual, semi-skilled, and skilled work within Mosquito Control and Stormwater Maintenance. The appointed employee will engage in various activities essential to maintaining and improving stormwater facilities, which directly contribute to environmental protection and flood prevention in Leon County. Primary duties include cleaning stormwater facilities by cutting weeds, trimming and chipping small trees and bushes, and removing aquatic plants and debris such as beaver dams and spoil deposits. The role also requires the completion of detailed daily reports documenting cleaning activities and equipment usage.
Maintenance tasks are equally vital, encompassing erosion control, repair of filters, headwalls, spillways, fencing, and the placement of sandbags. The employee will also perform landscaping duties like mowing, weeding, raking, fertilizing, and mulching to ensure the upkeep and operational soundness of stormwater systems. Operating various types of equipment forms a significant part of daily responsibilities, such as driving dump trucks and crew trucks, and handling machinery like bush chippers, bushhogs, slope mowers, positracts, stump grinders, power mowers, chainsaws, power packers, power augers, and concrete mixers. The use of non-powered hand tools such as sling blades, shovels, rakes, bush axes, and post-hole diggers is also expected.
Additional responsibilities include maintaining and repairing equipment, ensuring mowers and trailers are in sound working condition, and fueling and lubricating vehicles and heavy machinery. The position may function as a lead worker, filling in supervisory roles with Non-DOC personnel or Community Service workers when necessary, ensuring tasks are performed safely and efficiently. The work is physically demanding and performed outdoors under varying weather conditions, often exposing the employee to insects and animals, necessitating a strong adherence to safety protocols.
Candidates must have a solid foundation of knowledge in reading, writing, and arithmetic, as well as understanding the occupational hazards and safety measures associated with their duties. Mechanical aptitude for basic maintenance including oil changes and lubrication is essential. Familiarity with Florida traffic laws and the ability to operate equipment safely in heavy traffic are critical skills. The position demands courteous public interaction and the ability to maintain professional relationships in the workplace. A minimum educational requirement is completion of the eighth grade, complemented by at least one year of related work experience. Additionally, possessing a Class B Temporary Driving Permit with an 'N' endorsement at hire and obtaining a full Class B license with the 'N' endorsement within 90 days are mandatory.
Leon County Government offers a comprehensive benefit package for full-time employees, including employer and employee contributions toward medical insurance, voluntary dental and vision insurance, flexible spending accounts, group term life insurance, supplemental life insurance options, long-term disability, legal insurance, and individual insurance coverage plans with AFLAC and Colonial. The organization also supports retirement planning through the State of Florida Retirement Plan with contributions from both employer and employee, along with a voluntary 457(b) deferred compensation savings plan. Additional benefits include an annual leave accrual system, sick leave, personal days, paid parental leave, a tuition assistance program, an employee assistance program, and participation in the Loans At Work program, reflecting a strong emphasis on employee well-being and professional development.
