Job Description
The University of Miami, located in South Florida, is a prestigious academic institution known for its commitment to excellence in education, research, and community service. As an internationally recognized university, it has a strong tradition of fostering innovation and academic achievement. The University of Miami is also home to UHealth - the University of Miami Health System, which is South Florida's only university-based health system. UHealth provides leading-edge patient care supported by groundbreaking research and medical education through the Miller School of Medicine. Serving South Florida, Latin America, and the Caribbean, UHealth's physicians cover more than 100 specialties and sub-specialties and engage with over one million patient encounters annually. The University offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and tuition remission among others. It operates as an equal opportunity employer, ensuring a respectful and inclusive environment free from discrimination based on federally protected categories.
The Specialized Security Services Officer (SSSO) at the University of Miami serves as a vital member of the Public Safety team. This full-time staff position demands a highly trained officer who plays a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of patients, visitors, staff, and medical personnel across all UHealth facilities. The SSSO's main responsibility is to provide rapid response to high-risk incidents, such as active shooter or armed intruder situations. This role requires advanced tactical readiness as well as the ability to exercise exceptional judgment under high-pressure, potentially life-threatening scenarios. The officer acts as a visible deterrent to violence and is part of a coordinated tactical unit designed to contain and stabilize critical incidents until the arrival of law enforcement authorities.
In this challenging role, the SSSO is expected to conduct regular patrols on foot and vehicle under various weather conditions to ensure a safe and secure environment. Immediate response to emergencies, security, and disaster situations is crucial. The officer also provides assistance and directions to patients, visitors, and employees and strictly enforces security and safety policies in line with system procedures and applicable laws. Maintaining confidentiality and displaying sound judgment in all interactions are key. Physical intervention may be required when dealing with acts of aggression or violence. The role also includes maintenance and readiness oversight of security equipment, active communication and collaboration with other Public Safety staff, and fulfilling other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
Department-specific duties include controlling building access, preventing property loss or damage, enforcing university and departmental policies, responding to alarms, monitoring and reporting safety hazards, and preparing detailed reports on incidents and departmental activities. Work locations may rotate monthly based on operational needs or at the Executive Director's discretion. This comprehensive role demands a keen attention to detail, a strong sense of responsibility, and the ability to work effectively within a team dedicated to public safety in a healthcare environment. Overall, the Specialized Security Services Officer stands as a cornerstone in the University of Miami's endeavor to foster a secure, safe, and welcoming atmosphere for all members of the community.
