Job Description
The City of Fort Wayne is a vibrant municipality committed to enhancing the quality of life of its residents through innovative community programs and sustainable development. One of its standout community assets is the Riverfront area, a hub for recreation, education, and cultural events that celebrate Fort Wayne's unique ecological and historical heritage. The Riverfront serves as a gathering place for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and visitors, promoting active lifestyles and fostering community engagement through a calendar of diverse programs and special events.
The role of Special Events Coordinator is essential in bringing the Riverfront to life by organizing and leading a variety of activities that engage the public and encourage greater use of this treasured natural resource. This position is part-time, requiring 20-30 hours per week with a flexible schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays, making it ideal for individuals passionate about event planning and outdoor recreation.
As the Special Events Coordinator, you will have the opportunity to work hands-on with the community by planning, setting up, and leading programs and events such as walking tours, field trips, and water-based activities like kayaking and canoeing. Your responsibilities also extend to supporting boating operations, which includes preparing boats, instructing passengers, and ensuring safety compliance to provide a secure and enjoyable environment for participants of all ages.
This position requires someone who thrives in an active and outdoor setting, enjoys working closely with people, and has the skills to manage volunteers and instructors effectively. You will be instrumental in recruiting, scheduling, training, and overseeing volunteers and instructors, ensuring programs run smoothly and efficiently. In addition to event coordination, the role involves administrative duties such as maintaining inventory, preparing reports, collecting fees, and managing program resources.
The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED and some experience in event coordination, recreation, or boating programs. Strong communication, leadership, and customer service skills are vital for success in this role. Familiarity with kayaking, canoeing, or other non-powered boats, and experience operating motorized boats safely are highly valued. The role also benefits from proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and knowledge of the local ecology and history of the Fort Wayne Riverfront.
Working for the City of Fort Wayne provides a unique chance to contribute to a thriving community initiative while gaining valuable experience in recreation management and boating operations. This position offers a rewarding balance of outdoor activity, community interaction, and professional development in a supportive, team-oriented setting. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of drug screening, physical examination, and background checks, reaffirming the City's commitment to safety and professionalism.
