Job Description

California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is a prominent public university located in Northridge, California, known for its strong commitment to student success and community engagement. As a leading academic institution within the California State University system, CSUN offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs and fosters an inclusive and diverse campus environment. The university is dedicated to providing exemplary service to all stakeholders, including students, faculty, and the surrounding community, and continually works to be a destination workplace that values diversity, equity, and inclusion while supporting employee growth and recognition.

CSUN's Theatre Arts Department requires a Special Event Technician who will play a vital role in supporting the technical operations of special events and rentals in the theatre facilities. This position operates on an on-call or as-needed basis and encompasses a variety of events such as theatre productions, dance performances, vocal concerts, film screenings, and guest speaker engagements. The Special Event Technician works under general supervision, collaborating closely with CSUN community members and external producers to ensure that each event is executed safely and successfully.

The role involves a broad array of technical responsibilities, including the setup and running of audio systems and sound boards as well as lighting configuration tasks like hanging, focusing, and operating lighting boards. The technician must also supervise the use of department spaces by managing access and security measures and adeptly use the counterweight rigging system. A hands-on approach is required, involving the use of various woodworking tools—whether stationary, power, or hand tools—along with interpreting technical drawings and designs to facilitate installation and stage management.

Front of house operations and audience management are also key duties, requiring effective communication and organizational skills to maintain a well-coordinated environment during performances or events. This continuous recruitment aims to build a pool of qualified technicians available for intermittent, on-call work. The position is temporary, with an end date yet to be determined, offering a competitive hourly wage ranging from $21.47 to $31.27 depending on qualifications and experience.

Applicants must meet essential qualifications, including experience in theatrical lighting, sound, projections, stage rigging, and set construction. A Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Fine Arts, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory. Additionally, possessing a valid California Driver's License is advantageous. Knowledge of electrical theory, safety standards, design principles, and budgeting for materials will support the technician's ability to adapt to various event production needs. Candidates should be prepared to train and supervise students participating in productions as part of their role.

Working at CSUN offers numerous benefits and a chance to contribute to a vibrant university community dedicated to excellence, innovation, and inclusivity. This role is suitable for those who are passionate about theatre production and technical support, enjoy a dynamic work environment, and seek opportunities to develop professionally while making a meaningful impact in the performing arts at a respected academic institution.
