The Special Event Technician position at CSUN plays a crucial role within the Theatre Arts department, supporting the technical aspects of various special events and facility rentals. This is a staff position classified under Unit 9 - CSUEU - Technical Support Services, with work being part-time and temporary on an on-call basis. The role primarily involves assisting with theatre, dance, vocal performances, film screenings, and guest speaker events hosted within the university's theatre facilities. With a focus on safety and event success, the Special Event Technician is responsible for setting up audio and operating sound boards, managing lighting setups, including hanging and focusing lights, and running lighting boards. Additionally, they supervise and manage theatre department spaces, ensuring proper access control and utilize stage rigging systems such as counterweight rigging.

This position requires working knowledge in various technical disciplines including audio, lighting, and stage rigging, alongside hands-on experience with tools for set construction and maintenance. The Special Event Technician interprets technical drawings and design specifications to execute theatre production requirements effectively. Front of house operations and audience management are also part of the duties. Candidates for this role should possess a general understanding of basic electrical theory relevant to theatre tech, be familiar with safety protocols for stage construction and operations, and have the ability to use relevant software tools for lighting and sound production.

Job Requirements

  • general knowledge of basic electrical theory
  • working knowledge of lighting and/or sound effects
  • working knowledge of safety requirements and standards related to stage and set construction, lighting, and stage operations
  • working knowledge of design principles
  • ability to translate design specifications, blueprints, or drawings into applicable costume, scenery, lighting and sound production
  • foundation knowledge of applicable software packages for production specialty
  • ability to identify appropriate materials and supplies and manage materials budgets for projects
  • ability to assist in training and supervision of students involved in productions
  • willingness to work intermittent, on-call hours
  • ability to comply with background check and mandated reporter requirements
  • authorization to work in the United States

Job Qualifications

  • equivalent of one to two years experience working for a theater, repertory, or stock company performing duties in lighting, sound, and projections, stage rigging and set construction or related work
  • bachelor’s degree in theatre, the fine arts, or a related field is preferred
  • valid California driver’s license is preferred

Job Duties

  • work to ensure a safe working environment and successful completion of events

  • supervise use of theatre department spaces including locking/unlocking and granting access
  • utilize a counterweight rigging system
  • work with stationary, power, and hand tools used in woodworking

  • provide front of house operations and audience management
  • perform other duties as assigned
