Job Description

Open Door Mission (ODM) is a well-established Gospel Rescue Mission founded in 1954, dedicated to breaking the cycles of homelessness and poverty within the community. Located on its Omaha campus, ODM operates as a full-time Christian ministry focused on providing compassionate care and essential services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness and economic hardship. Their impactful work includes offering over 900 safe shelter beds, serving millions of nutritious meals annually, and delivering preventive resources that empower vulnerable populations to retain their housing stability. With a Christ-centered approach, ODM not only meets physical needs but also addresses emotional and spiritual wellbeing, emphasizing dignity, worth, and the intrinsic value of every person created in God’s image. The organization thrives on volunteer support and community partnerships, aiming to create sustainable solutions that foster hope and transformation in the Omaha area and beyond.

The Sous Chef role at Open Door Mission is pivotal in advancing the mission’s core objective of feeding and supporting those affected by homelessness and poverty. This full-time position works under the guidance of the Hospitality Manager, also referred to as the Head Chef, to oversee kitchen operations, meal preparation, and menu creation using carefully managed donated food supplies. The Sous Chef’s duties include preparing meals for men, women, and children residing on campus, as well as community members in need, ensuring that every dish served meets quality, safety, and nutritional standards. Beyond culinary expertise, the Sous Chef plays a leadership role by directing volunteers and assisting residents who contribute to kitchen tasks, fostering a collaborative and constructive environment. A key responsibility is to maintain the kitchen’s cleanliness and safety practices, preserving the establishment's exceptional health department rating. This role also requires a flexible and creative approach, innovating recipes to maximize food resources while reflecting the mission’s Christ-centered values by sharing the gospel and exemplifying compassion in everyday interactions.

The ideal candidate for this position brings at least two years of culinary education or relevant cooking experience, with a strong background in preparing large-scale meals and proficiency in scratch cooking and baking techniques. Experience managing a variety of kitchen equipment and effective communication skills to engage with volunteers and donors on the organization’s goals are highly valued. The role offers a competitive pay range of $17.00 to $25.00 per hour, paid bi-weekly, and includes numerous employee benefits designed to support holistic wellbeing, including a 401(k) plan with matching contributions, health insurance options with employer-funded health savings accounts, paid time off, and access to on-campus amenities. By joining ODM as a Sous Chef, candidates have the opportunity to contribute to an inspiring, faith-driven team dedicated to meaningful, lasting change in their community.
