The Sommelier role at Jon & Vinny's is integral to maintaining the restaurant's high standards for wine service and guest satisfaction. This position demands a passion for wine alongside a strong commitment to hospitality, supporting an energetic team in delivering exceptional guest experiences. The Sommelier will work closely with management to manage wine deliveries, stock the wine inventory accurately, and maintain immaculate wine service protocols at all times. They will be responsible for guiding guests through the wine list, recommending selections tailored to individual preferences, and ensuring that all wine offerings are presented and served with proper etiquette. Beyond floor duties, the Sommelier will support retail wine sales, manage beverage inventory, and help maintain a clean, organized work environment.

This role requires excellent product knowledge, including familiarity with all wines on the list, regional winemaking distinctions, and the ability to confidently serve still and sparkling wines using appropriate techniques such as decanting and the Ah-So opener for older bottles. The Sommelier must also be adept at managing fast-paced service environments, multitasking between assisting guests and handling behind-the-scenes responsibilities efficiently. Key certifications like ServSafe, TIPS, and California Sexual Harassment prevention are essential.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • previous experience in hospitality or wine service
  • ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds
  • excellent physical stamina including standing and walking for long periods
  • ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste and smell
  • strong interpersonal skills
  • must be able to work in a dynamic, high-energy environment
  • ability to maintain cleanliness and organization
  • up-to-date ServSafe certification
  • up-to-date California Sexual Harassment and Abusive Conduct Prevention certificate
  • up-to-date TIPS certification

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of wine regions and winemaking
  • prior experience as a sommelier or in a wine service role
  • strong customer service skills
  • ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • excellent communication skills
  • familiarity with Toast POS
  • completion of wine study quizzes
  • certification in ServSafe, TIPS, and California Sexual Harassment and Abusive Conduct Prevention
  • ability to confidently open still and sparkling wines table side
  • skill in decanting wines and using Ah-So opener

Job Duties

  • Assess wine deliveries at the start of the shift at management's direction
  • read invoices, price new wines with correct markup, and stock them correctly
  • avoid stocking during busiest times unless necessary
  • introduce self and wine program to new tables
  • take or assist with every wine order if location only has beer and wine
  • check quality of all bottles ordered
  • ensure correct wine ringing in Toast
  • support and assist retail customers with wine retail
  • assist in DoorDash beverage sales
  • assist customers via email or phone creating friendly atmosphere
  • guide guests with exceptional customer service to cultivate repeat customers
  • ensure all bottles are fronted and flush
  • keep by-the-glass cubbies and beverage fridge stocked with BTG wines at all times
  • stock at end of shift for next day service
  • keep work areas clean and dusted
  • know wine list thoroughly including producers and inventory
  • pass wine study quizzes
  • manage floor and shop flow solo
  • confidently open still and sparkling wines tableside
  • serve wine following proper etiquette and protocol
  • decant wines when needed or requested
  • use Ah-So for older bottles
  • complete nightly side work and review with closing manager
  • maintain up-to-date certifications including ServSafe, California Sexual Harassment, and TIPS
  • perform other duties as assigned
