This part-time cook position with rotating shifts offers an exciting opportunity to be part of the exceptional care team at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. The role primarily involves preparing, seasoning, and cooking food for patients, employees, and visitors according to established recipes and menus, ensuring quality and compliance with dietary requirements. The cook is responsible for overseeing the activities of Culinary Assistants in food production, coordinating meal schedules, and suggesting menu modifications to optimize the use of food supplies. Key responsibilities include reviewing menus, measuring and combining ingredients accurately, monitoring food production levels to avoid shortages or surpluses, and maintaining sanitary conditions in the kitchen and food storage areas. This role also requires close collaboration with the Sous Chef and adherence to the organizational mission and values.

Job Duties

  • Review menus and production schedules regularly to determine types and quantities of food items to prepare and plan cooking schedules to meet meal schedules
  • Measure, weigh, and combine ingredients for quantitative preparation of hot and cold food items according to established recipes
  • Cook regular and diet menu items according to established procedures
  • Ensure menu items are prepared in a timely manner and items requiring advanced preparation are ready for meal times
  • Monitor consumption of assigned menu items and adjust food production to avoid shortages or surpluses
  • Organize and oversee work of Culinary Assistants preparing meals ensuring food preparation meets standards
  • Inspect food storage areas, ensure proper storage to prevent spoilage, stock refrigerators, freezers, and cabinets
  • Maintain clean and sanitary conditions of equipment, counters, utensils, and production areas
  • Monitor food inventory and requisition foods as needed
  • Perform Culinary Assistant duties as required
  • Assist Sous Chef as needed
  • Maintain good rapport and cooperative relationships, approach conflict constructively
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient, physician, employee, and visitor information
  • Behave in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values
  • Assume responsibility for safety in performing job duties and report hazards immediately
