Job Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • three years of recent experience as a Utility Locator or equivalent including at least one year of leadership experience
  • valid California Class C driver’s license or equivalent at time of appointment
  • respiratory protection compliance and confined space entry certification
  • ability to respond to after-hour emergency calls including weekends and holidays
  • physical strength, agility, and endurance to perform duties
  • ability to lift and carry tools and equipment up to 50 pounds for up to 50 feet

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • three years of recent experience as a Utility Locator or equivalent
  • at least one year of demonstrated leadership capability
  • knowledge of applicable safety codes, rules, practices, regulations, and procedures
  • basic computer utilization and computer programs
  • underground construction practices
  • underground service alert procedures
  • utility underground substructure environment
  • safe operation of underground construction equipment
  • procedures associated with trenching, backfilling, and compaction of trenches and excavations
  • various types of utility locator equipment
  • high voltage electrical overhead and underground distribution systems and associated safe work practices
  • mathematical proficiency
  • basic electrical concepts
  • basic water utility concepts
  • computer-based and paper maps, charts, diagrams, and associated symbols
  • work order accounting procedures

Job Duties

  • Supervises, coordinates and ensures the accuracy and timeliness of work assignments for employees
  • organizes, assigns, and schedules workload among employees
  • provides clear work instructions
  • oversees, searches, locates, and identifies all BWP underground facilities including primary duct banks, secondary conduits, street light circuits, fiber optic and supervisory cable paths, water pipes, and direct buried cables
  • marks the identified underground facilities by use of marking chalk and/or marking paint
  • marks and identifies the located devices as appropriate by utilizing supplied maps, prints, available equipment, and established techniques
  • advises and directs others on the safe and proper methods of digging in the proximity of high and low voltage electrical cables and other underground facilities, and on the proper use and type of equipment that may be used when digging around BWP underground facilities
  • performs traffic control and mediation
  • performs quality control of location identification by recording evidence of marking via digital photography
  • accesses confined spaces, energized environments, and secured areas
  • reads, understands, and interprets blueprints, engineering drawings, and water and electrical plans
  • oversees, prepares, and/or maintains routine work records and necessary reports
  • participates in annual training as needed
  • coordinates budget preparation
  • supervises, trains, and evaluates employees
  • makes effective recommendations regarding promotion, transfer, and disciplinary action up to and including termination
  • drives on City business
