The University of Rochester is currently seeking part-time team members to join the Douglass Dining/Auxiliary Operations department. This role, based in the heart of Rochester, NY, involves working under immediate supervision, primarily during daytime hours. The position requires 32.5 scheduled weekly hours, classified as a regular part-time role with compensation ranging from $18.38 to $24.94 per hour based on the collective bargaining agreement. The role emphasizes maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards within a food service environment and supporting the efficient operations of the dining services.

As a dishwasher and kitchen helper, you will be essential to ensuring that utensils, dishes, pots, pans, and work areas are impeccably clean and sanitized according to health and safety standards. Responsibilities include operating dishwashing machinery, cleaning floors and walls, handling food supplies, assisting with stock management, and sometimes helping with customer service tasks such as serving at counters. This role is instrumental in supporting the vibrant dining experience at the University of Rochester, ensuring that all areas remain sanitized and supplies are managed efficiently. Candidates must be capable of standing and walking most of the day, performing physical tasks like lifting and carrying, and working cooperatively in a fast-paced food service environment.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Prior experience in food service or dishwashing preferred
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects safely
  • Basic understanding of sanitation standards
  • Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment
  • Availability to work the scheduled 32.5 hours per week
  • Willingness to comply with university policies on diversity and inclusion

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to work compatibly in a food service atmosphere
  • Physical ability to stand and walk short distances most of the working day
  • Ability to reach for, lift, and carry various materials
  • Ability to perform light and heavy cleaning
  • Ability to work cooperatively under immediate supervision
  • Experience with food service safety and sanitation preferred

Job Duties

  • Cleans equipment, utensils, pots and pans, and work areas including floors and walls
  • Handles supplies in a food service department
  • Picks up used dishes from counter areas and tables, prepares for washing by scraping and pre-rinsing, washes by machine or by hand silver, china, glasses and/or pots and pans
  • Performs general helper duties and assists in handling supplies and food as directed such as replenishing milk supply, transporting supplies, equipment, and materials, picking up dishes from tables when necessary, unpacking stock, and occasionally helping to serve on counter
  • Maintains prescribed sanitation standards performing duties such as cleaning machines and kitchen equipment, washing floors and walls, waxing floors, cleaning windows and performing other general cleaning as directed
  • Performs other duties as directed
