This specific role is within the Douglass Dining/Auxiliary Operations department at the University of Rochester and is a full-time position requiring 37.5 hours per week. The position is located at 735 Library Road, Rochester, New York, which is part of the vibrant campus community. The role falls under the worker subtype Regular and shift UR - Day, with compensation ranging between $19.13 to $25.95 per hour as per the collective bargaining agreement.
The position is focused on assisting in food service operations, especially supporting cooks in preparing meals and managing kitchen tasks. The ideal candidate will perform various food preparation activities, including cutting, peeling, and measuring ingredients, as well as operating multiple types of kitchen equipment such as ovens, grills, and mixers. They will also be responsible for preparing beverages, handling special dietary foods, making up patient trays, and ensuring that sanitation and safety standards are strictly adhered to. This role requires a hands-on approach to support the kitchen team and ensure smooth and efficient food service delivery to diners.
A significant component of the job involves maintaining cleanliness and organization within the food preparation area. This includes cleaning utensils, equipment, and work surfaces, properly storing food, and managing food supplies. The ability to lift moderately heavy items up to 40-50 pounds is necessary. Previous experience in commercial food service and a good understanding of food preparation methods are essential to succeed in this role.

Job Duties
- Assists in gathering food supplies and equipment for cooks and assists in food preparation
- Performs grill and broiler activities independently
- Tends foods that are cooking and tests them for progress
- Adjusts cooking time and temperature and adds seasonings and ingredients as directed
- Prepares beverages and special diet or short-order foods
- Peels, washes, trims, and cuts vegetables, fruit, meat, cheese and other foods
- Measures and mixes ingredients according to recipes
- Prepares servings of food items and makes up patients' trays
- Serves food onto food truck or containers
- Observes precautions against deterioration and degradation of foods
- Removes food from carts when returned and processes or discards as directed
- Cleans utensils, equipment and work area
- Stores food in prescribed manner
- Obtains and arranges food, supplies, and utensils
- Prepares oven, fryers, and grills
- May obtain food trucks, containers and trays
