Job Description

Banner Health is a nationally recognized healthcare leader known for its commitment to excellence in patient care, innovation, and community service. Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, a vibrant city known for its mix of modern amenities and rich cultural heritage, Banner Health provides a diverse and dynamic work environment for healthcare professionals and support staff alike. The organization values a comprehensive approach to healthcare that includes not only doctors and nurses but also essential security and facilities management personnel who contribute to the safety and well-being of patients, visitors, and staff across all its facilities.

At Banner Health, great careers are built through a supportive and inclusive work environment where employees are encouraged to find paths that best suit their skills and aspirations. The company offers a range of career opportunities within various disciplines, including Human Resources, Finance, Information Technology, Legal, Managed Care Programs, Public Relations, and importantly, Facilities and Security. Banner Health’s Security Special Operations Division is a critical part of the organization, charged with protecting the safety of the hospital community and ensuring secure operations across the campus.

The Tactical Officer position at Banner Health is a specialized security role. These officers are highly trained professionals responsible for handling the most violent and dangerous security incidents at the facility. Tactical Officers receive advanced training in de-escalation techniques, non-lethal defensive systems, defensive tactics, and critical thinking skills to manage emergency and high-risk situations effectively. This role operates predominantly within the Emergency Department and serves as the first responder to critical security incidents, often acting as the primary liaison with law enforcement and emergency service agencies during such events.

Tactical Officers at Banner Health work 12-hour shifts across varied schedules, including day and night shifts, with an 18% night shift differential for shifts with at least two hours between 7 pm and 7 am. The role is physically demanding, requiring officers to successfully complete and maintain standards set by the Cooper Institute Physical Fitness Assessment Test, which includes a 1.5-mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, vertical jump, and a 300-meter run. Physical fitness is a continuous requirement, assessed bi-annually to ensure readiness for the position.

Successful candidates must have a minimum of three years of experience as a law enforcement officer (LEO) or military service, underscoring the importance of discipline, tactical knowledge, and proven security expertise. Banner Health emphasizes the importance of interpersonal skills and customer service orientation, as tactical officers regularly interact with patients, visitors, staff, and external law enforcement agencies. The role demands advanced critical thinking, monitoring abilities, and the capacity to assess situations quickly and respond appropriately to conflicts, emergencies, or security breaches.

In addition to responding to security incidents, Tactical Officers are involved in patrol duties throughout the hospital campus, ensuring the safety and security of buildings, personnel, and visitors. They prepare detailed investigative reports, conduct apprehensions in cases of conflict or unauthorized access, and provide security assistance whenever necessary. The position requires officers to enforce security rules and regulations, respond calmly and swiftly to emergency situations, and maintain accurate records of all activities.

Embracing the Banner Health core values, Tactical Officers contribute a critical role in safeguarding a healthcare environment where patients receive the highest quality of care in a secure setting. This role not only demands physical readiness but also emotional intelligence, tactical expertise, and a commitment to public safety within the expansive Banner Health system, which serves multiple facilities and communities. The position reports directly to the Security Director and carries a responsibility to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and service.

Joining Banner Health as a Tactical Officer offers an exciting career opportunity with competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, and the chance to be part of an award-winning team dedicated to excellence in healthcare security and safety.
