Job Description
The City of Billings Parks Department, located in Billings, Montana, is a respected governmental organization dedicated to maintaining and enhancing public recreational spaces, parks, and public lands for the community's enjoyment. This department is committed to environmental stewardship, proper maintenance, and efficient management of municipal park areas, ensuring they remain safe, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally sustainable. The Parks Department plays a crucial role in the quality of life for residents by preserving green spaces and providing recreational amenities that promote outdoor activities and community events.
The City of Billings is currently seeking a Turf Applicator for a seasonal position during the summer of 2026, lasting between three to six months. This role provides a meaningful opportunity for candidates interested in turf management, landscaping, and park maintenance to gain practical experience while contributing to the upkeep and beautification of public parks. The position is compensated at an hourly rate of $21.00 and follows a Monday through Friday work schedule from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., providing a predictable and consistent routine.
As a Turf Applicator, the incumbent will play an essential role in maintaining the health and appearance of turf areas throughout the city's parks. The primary responsibilities involve identifying various weeds, mixing, transporting, and accurately applying weed control products and fertilizers according to safety and environmental guidelines. This includes calibrating equipment to ensure precise application, maintaining detailed records of chemical use, and monitoring the effectiveness of treatments to ensure desirable results.
This role demands a strong awareness of safety protocols, especially concerning chemical applications and public interaction, as the applicator must work carefully around play areas, water bodies, and park visitors. The job entails physical work requiring the use of manual tools, walking, bending, lifting, and operating equipment such as power weed trimmers and push mowers. The ability to work independently and follow established policies is vital for success in this position.
Candidates with a background or interest in landscape maintenance, farm work, weed management, or related fields will find this position particularly suitable. The City emphasizes the importance of a positive safety attitude and adherence to personal protective equipment usage. Although this is a seasonal position without eligibility for benefits, it offers valuable hands-on experience in a public sector environment, serving the Billings community. The applicant must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid driver’s license with a good driving record, be authorized to work in the United States, and pass a pre-employment drug test.
This position reflects the City of Billings Parks Department’s ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable and well-maintained green spaces for all residents and visitors, supporting health, recreation, and community well-being through dedicated park management professionals.
