Job Description
This job opportunity is for a Seasonal Barback position that offers part-time employment, primarily during night and evening shifts. The role is perfect for individuals who are looking to work in a busy bar environment and support bartenders and cocktail servers. The establishment is a bar that operates in an interior space where staff must handle moderate to high noise levels and be comfortable standing and walking for extended periods. This position emphasizes safety and efficiency in beverage service, with a focus on maintaining adequate supplies and cleanliness at the workstation.
As a Barback, your main responsibility is to ensure that bartenders and cocktail servers have everything they need to provide satisfactory beverage service to customers. This includes retrieving and checking stock orders, maintaining the bar supplies such as garnishes, straws, stir sticks, napkins, and matches, and keeping the bar area clean and organized. You will be tasked with rotating beer stock, filling refrigerators, washing and stocking glassware, and preparing perishable garnishes like fruits by cutting, slicing, and peeling. Additionally, you will help with routine maintenance tasks including transporting and replacing heavy beer kegs, cleaning various bar equipment, and managing ice bins and waste disposal.
The work environment requires physical stamina, as the position involves lifting supplies up to 100 pounds and enduring the presence of second-hand smoke, bright lights, and ambient noise typical of a bar setting. Candidates must be at least 21 years old and either have or be capable of obtaining a New Mexico Alcohol Server Permit. While a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, relevant experience with bartending or barback duties for at least one year is a primary requirement. This role is seasonal and part-time, providing flexibility for those pursuing other commitments or seeking temporary work in the hospitality industry.
Working hours are mostly in the evenings and nights, which aligns well with the operating hours of many bars and nightclubs. The role also demands good communication and teamwork skills, since you will interact closely with bartenders and other staff to ensure the smooth flow of service. The ability to maintain cleanliness and ensure safety standards are met is paramount. This position offers an excellent chance to gain or build hospitality and beverage service experience, and it lays a solid foundation for those considering a future career as a bartender or in bar management.
Overall, this Seasonal Barback position is a dynamic and engaging role within a fast-paced bar environment. It allows for hands-on experience in beverage service operations, physical activity, and teamwork, making it ideal for candidates who thrive in lively settings and enjoy contributing to a positive customer experience.
