Job Description

Davidson County Schools is a public school district located in Davidson County, North Carolina, dedicated to providing quality education and supportive services to its students. The district emphasizes fostering a nurturing and safe environment that promotes academic success and personal growth for every student. Davidson County Schools operates multiple schools within the region, and it aims to support not only educational goals but also the overall well-being of its students. One of the integral parts of this support system is the School Nutrition Department, which ensures that students receive healthy and nutritious meals during their school day in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

The role of the School Nutrition Assistant Floater is a vital position within the School Nutrition Department of Davidson County Schools. This position is a part-time role requiring 30 hours per week, available starting December 11, 2025. The hourly pay rate for this position is $16.81, and it falls under Pay Grade 54. As a School Nutrition Assistant Floater, the employee will primarily assist cafeteria staff across various schools by performing a diverse range of tasks including food preparation support, cashiering duties, cleaning, and maintenance of cafeteria equipment and work areas. The assistant is expected to follow detailed instructions provided daily by the cafeteria manager or their designee and complete the assigned tasks diligently.

Working under the direct supervision of the School Nutrition Manager, this position requires the assistant to ensure that all activities comply with the National School Lunch Program regulations, emphasizing food quality, safety, and sanitation standards. The role demands some experience in quantity food preparation and familiarity with sanitation protocols to maintain a clean and safe food preparation environment. Physical stamina is needed to manage lifting (up to 50 pounds occasionally), standing for prolonged periods, and handling kitchen equipment safely.

The job includes cleaning cafeteria equipment such as refrigerators, dishwashers, and oven hoods, maintaining serving and storage areas, assisting with food deliveries, and preparing dining room settings. Additionally, the assistant helps with the operational side such as cashiering, recording food product usage, and supporting administrative tasks. This position requires effective communication skills for interacting positively with students, staff, parents, and vendors. It also necessitates computer skills for tracking customer accounts and assisting with reports.

The School Nutrition Assistant Floater holds an important role not only in food service but occasionally serves as a substitute bus driver, which requires obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and bus license, expanding the scope of responsibilities beyond cafeteria assistance alone. This opportunity offers passionate individuals the chance to contribute meaningfully to school operations and student welfare.

Candidates applying for this position must submit a resume and demonstrate compliance with educational, experience, and physical requirements. The position is tailored to those who are organized, safety-conscious, and committed to maintaining high standards of hygiene and food safety. Davidson County Schools provides a supportive work environment with an emphasis on professional responsibility and teamwork in service of student success.
