Job Description

The employer is a Child Nutrition Services department within a school district, committed to providing high quality, nutritious meals to students as part of its comprehensive school nutrition program. This department plays a vital role in fostering student health, wellness, and academic success by ensuring access to balanced, appealing, and cost-effective food options during school hours. The district's commitment to child nutrition extends beyond meal preparation to engaging school staff and the community in promoting good nutrition and healthy eating habits. The work environment is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring staff flexibility, attention to detail, and adherence to strict food safety standards such as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) protocols. This program is crucial to meeting federal and state regulatory standards, as well as district policies, ensuring meals meet nutritional guidelines and are served in a safe and sanitary manner.

The role of the School Kitchen Supervisor is a full-time supervisory position under the direct oversight of the Child Nutrition Services Director or their designee. The primary responsibility is the efficient and effective management of the school kitchen, including supervising food service staff, coordinating meal preparation, maintaining inventory, ensuring adherence to safety and sanitation standards, and supporting the goals of the district’s nutrition program. This position requires hands-on involvement in food preparation as well as administrative duties such as ordering supplies, maintaining accurate records, menu planning, food cost calculations, and payroll management. The School Kitchen Supervisor ensures the environment complies with all applicable safety, sanitation, and quality regulations, monitors the condition and operation of kitchen equipment, and arranges necessary maintenance or repairs.

The successful candidate serves as a key leader who creates work schedules, directs and trains staff, conducts performance evaluations, and fosters cooperative relationships with school personnel and students. Physical demands include prolonged standing and walking, lifting up to 25 pounds, and performing various manual tasks in a sometimes fast-paced setting that requires adaptability, multitasking, and effective communication. Overall, this role is vital to supporting student wellness initiatives and the child nutrition program’s ongoing success.
