Job Description
St. Mary School, part of the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay, is an educational institution dedicated to providing a faith-based, high-quality learning environment for its students. The school values the integration of Catholic faith and teachings with academic excellence, fostering a community that nurtures spiritual growth, personal development, and academic achievement. The school operates within a close-knit parish community, placing strong emphasis on service, stewardship, and moral values. St. Mary School ensures that every member of its staff not only fulfills their professional responsibilities but also actively participates in the faith and mission of the Catholic Church through various spiritual activities and community engagements.
The Custodian position at St. Mary School is a vital role responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitized environment across the school’s buildings, grounds, and equipment. This non-exempt hourly role requires careful attention to detail and commitment to health and safety standards to provide a welcoming and safe atmosphere for students, staff, and visitors. The custodian works under the supervision of the pastor and is a key contributor to the school’s mission by embodying the culture and values that support a faith-forward community. With approximately 18 hours per week, this position involves a variety of custodial and groundskeeping duties that ensure the school facilities remain in excellent condition.
The custodian at St. Mary School goes beyond routine cleaning by actively participating in the school’s spiritual life and community activities, reflecting the Catholic Diocese’s values such as Faith Forward, Radiating Effects, Knowledge Leads to Love, Transparency Yields Trust, and Impressive Impressions. They engage with students and families, fostering confidence in the school’s cleanliness and overall environment. Responsibilities include sanitizing high-touch areas, bathrooms, hallways, and classrooms using appropriate chemical and cleaning methods that prevent the spread of viruses, especially important in today’s health-conscious environment.
This role demands not only physical capability to handle cleaning tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds and operating power scrubbers, but also organizational and communication skills for documenting and coordinating cleaning materials, scheduling, and complying with OSHA safety standards. The custodian must be mechanically inclined, able to troubleshoot minor issues around the facility, and manage time effectively while adhering to flexible working hours as needed by the school’s calendar and events. Participation in parish-required spiritual events and compliance with safety training such as VIRTUS are integral to the position, aligning with both the mission of the school and the moral standards of the Church.
Working conditions for this custodian role include both indoor and outdoor responsibilities, being exposed to various elements and cleaning chemicals while ensuring all areas are maintained safely and hygienically. The custodian serves as a primary contact person for planning and coordinating cleaning and groundskeeping duties performed by volunteers or other personnel. Though the role does not involve supervising other employees, it holds financial responsibility related to purchasing cleaning supplies within approved limits. This position is significant in helping maintain a safe, clean, and spiritually uplifting environment for the school community, ensuring all facilities reflect the values and mission of St. Mary School and the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay.
