The role offered is a full-time, permanent 12-month position of School Baker at Kapolei Elementary located in Kapolei, Hawaii. With a monthly salary of $5,054.00, this position is vital in supporting the school’s food service operations by preparing a variety of baked goods that meet the needs of students and staff. The School Baker will work within the Classified Leeward Complex Area under the Hawaii State Department of Education and is tasked with ensuring that all baked products are prepared timely, following standardized recipes and maintaining high sanitation standards.The position requires excellent baking skills and knowledge, specifically tailored to quantity baking for institutional food service. Candidates will be expected to coordinate with other food service employees, review production records daily, secure ingredients, and prepare a variety of baked items such as breads, rolls, buns, muffins, and pizza crusts. The role also involves serving students and staff, portioning meals for satellite schools, maintaining cleanliness of work areas, and supervision or training of helpers. Additionally, there is an emphasis on complying with USDA training requirements and participating in ongoing professional development.The ideal candidate will have foundational experience in bakery operations within a kitchen environment, preferably with a year of specialized experience in quantity baking. Job Requirements
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- Six months of experience as an apprentice or helper in a kitchen acquiring basic baking skills
- One year of specialized experience in quantity baking in a restaurant, hotel, hospital, school, or similar institution
- Ability to perform the full baking process in large quantities
- Familiarity with adjusting recipes and baking times for non-standard batch sizes
- Knowledge of safe food handling and sanitation
- Capable of performing physical tasks associated with baking
- Ability to maintain cleanliness and proper food storage
- Good communication and teamwork skills
Job Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- Experience as an apprentice or helper acquiring basic baking skills
- One year of experience as a baker in an institution producing a variety of baked goods from scratch in large quantities
- Knowledge of ingredients, their properties, functions, and substitutions
- Ability to adjust standardized recipes and calculate bread equivalents
- Proficiency in safe handling and care of baking utensils, tools, and equipment
- Understanding of food and kitchen safety and sanitation practices
- Ability to perform quantity baking required for school food services
- Experience in supervising and training helpers
Job Duties
- Coordinates and works closely with other food service employees to ensure baked goods are prepared in a timely manner to meet meal service times and/or satellite delivery schedule
- Reviews daily production records, determines appropriate standardized recipes, and secures necessary ingredients and equipment for preparation and/or baking purposes
- Accurately weighs, measures, and mixes ingredients in accordance with approved standardized recipes for daily/weekly production needs
- Prepares mixes for and bakes bread, rolls, buns, biscuits, muffins, pizza crusts, wiener in a blanket, and other baked goods
- Sets-up serving counters for meal service, serves students and staff, and replenishes food and other supplementary items as needed
- Portions and/or directs the portioning/packing of menu items for satellite meals
- Cleans and maintains work areas, serving counters, and dining areas in a neat, clean, sanitary, and orderly manner
- Properly labels, stores, and/or disposes leftover foods
- Receives provisions ordered, documents product temperature if applicable, and reports discrepancies
- Directs/instructs cafeteria helper(s) and/or other adult/student helper(s) assigned to assist with baking, serving, and/or clean-up
- Attends and participates in staff meetings, workshops, and in-service training
- achieves the annual minimum required training hours as outlined by the United States Department of Agriculture
