Job Description
The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, established in 1981, is the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, working collaboratively with the Presidio Trust, donors, partners, and the community to support the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). This remarkable park system extends across three counties in the Bay Area, encompassing highly iconic sites like the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods National Monument, Alcatraz Island, Fort Point National Historic Site, Crissy Field, Mori Point, Lands End, and the Presidio of San Francisco. As a dedicated park builder, caretaker, educator, and ambassador, the Parks Conservancy operates at the crossroads of national parks, social justice advocacy, climate resilience, and cultural and ecological stewardship. Their overarching vision, "Parks for All Forever," reflects their unwavering commitment to fostering public awareness, creating educational and volunteer opportunities, and engaging diverse communities to protect and enjoy these treasured public spaces.
The Sales Associate I role is a full-time, seasonal opportunity primarily based at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center located on the visitor plaza of the Golden Gate Bridge. This role is crucial in delivering outstanding visitor service and retail operations to the diverse visitors who come from all over the world to experience the Golden Gate National Parks. Sales Associate I team members sell interpretive merchandise, apparel, educational books, souvenirs, and a variety of other distinctive retail items that highlight the significant natural, cultural, and historic features of the parks. Key duties include restocking merchandise, maintaining visual merchandising standards, inventory assistance, proficient operation of point-of-sale systems, and cash handling with accuracy and professionalism. Under the guidance of Managers, Team Leads, and senior Sales Associates, this position serves as the public face of the Parks Conservancy, welcoming every visitor with a friendly, informative, and professional demeanor.
Beyond retail tasks, Sales Associate I's provide valuable visitor orientation about the Golden Gate Bridge itself and the broader Golden Gate National Parks network. This includes interpreting trails, cultural landmarks, ecological features, and historical highlights such as the Presidio and Alcatraz. Associates become knowledgeable about the Conservancy’s programs, initiatives, and volunteer opportunities, promoting membership benefits and encouraging donations through a unique "round-up" program at checkout to support the nonprofit mission. This role offers enriching onsite experiences that require walking and exploring other parks as part of ongoing learning to better assist visitors with navigation and engagement across sites.
The job demands excellent customer service and sales skills, a pleasant and helpful attitude, and flexibility to work weekends and holidays. Given its seasonal nature, the position is non-exempt and non-benefitted with a pay rate of $21/hour, falling into pay grade 11. Sales Associate I’s contribute significantly to expanding visitor connections to the parks, thereby strengthening the community of advocates dedicated to conserving these national treasures for future generations. The work environment is dynamic, combining retail and visitor information center settings with occasional outdoor activity, requiring the capacity to lift merchandise up to 50 pounds and stand or walk extensively during shifts. Uniforms are provided and required for each scheduled shift to maintain a professional standard.
Joining the Parks Conservancy team means becoming part of an organization deeply rooted in conservation values, community inclusion, and educational outreach. The role offers the chance to impact public enjoyment and awareness of one of the nation’s most cherished park systems, supporting the Conservancy’s broader mission to ensure the parks remain accessible, protected, and cherished "for all forever." Interested applicants are encouraged to submit thoughtful cover letters detailing their passion for the mission and their suitability for the Sales Associate I position.
