The Sales Team Member role at Smithfield Foods presents a great opportunity for growth and professional development. Supporting the Sales Director, Regional Sales Manager, or National Accounts Manager, the Sales Team Member will be directly responsible for establishing and maintaining strong relationships with key customers. This position involves daily corporate-to-corporate communication to convey pricing, product availability, and order management information. The role demands a deep understanding of Smithfield’s product lines, including bacon, ham, fresh pork, and other categories, to effectively meet customer demands and contribute to business growth.

The Sales Team Member will be entrusted with direct sales responsibilities such as achieving budgeted sales volumes, developing sales strategies aligned with realistic projections, and maintaining business with existing accounts for steady growth. Additionally, the role emphasizes communication and product management by keeping updated on Smithfield’s innovation efforts and collaborating with personnel at various organizational levels to ensure clear communication regarding product specifications and logistics.

Customer service is another critical aspect of the role, where the Sales Team Member should promptly address and resolve customer complaints or issues, sometimes involving coordination with corporate headquarters. The role also includes providing sales support by serving as a backup to other sales associates when needed, demonstrating flexibility and teamwork.

This position is ideal for candidates with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and a thorough knowledge of the Consumer Packaged Goods industry. Familiarity with data analysis tools such as IRI, Nielsen, and Perishable Group data, along with Microsoft Office and SAP proficiency, will enhance success in this role. Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills are essential, as is the ability to work well in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with respect and collaboration.

Travel is a significant aspect of the job, with up to 75% travel expected to meet client needs and business goals. A valid driver’s license is required. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2+ years relevant experience in sales or related field
  • must understand Consumer Packaged Goods industry dynamics
  • proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • preferred experience with SAP
  • strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • must possess a valid driver’s license
  • ability to travel up to 75% of the time

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university and 2+ years’ relevant experience
  • understanding of the dynamics of the Consumer Packaged Goods industry
  • solid understanding of customer focused and fact based selling including IRI, Nielsen and Perishable Group data
  • knowledge and experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint

Job Duties

  • Achieving budgeted sales of consumer goods to key customers
  • developing and achieving maximum sales volume consistent with realistic sales projections for accounts served
  • maintaining business with existing accounts for continued growth
  • maintaining current knowledge of Smithfield’s product management and research and development efforts
  • developing working relations with personnel at various levels to communicate product availability, logistics information, product specifications, and pricing
  • ensuring prompt and equitable disposition of customer complaints or problems
  • serving as backup for other sales associates as necessary
