Job Description

Sound Transit is a prominent regional transit agency serving the Puget Sound region in Washington State. Known for its commitment to reliable, sustainable, and safe public transportation options, Sound Transit operates a network that includes buses, light rail, commuter trains, and ferries connecting millions of residents across the area. As a forward-thinking public-sector organization, it prioritizes innovation, safety, and community engagement, making it an employer of choice for those passionate about shaping the future of transit and public safety. Its comprehensive benefits package and emphasis on professional development create a supportive work environment for employees at all levels. This internship opportunity is a paid position, offering hourly compensation ranging from $22 to $39, depending on the intern's role and qualifications. Undergraduate students and those pursuing graduate degrees are welcomed, with higher pay rates for graduate-level participants. Interns will gain hands-on experience while contributing to meaningful projects within the organization.

The Safety Promotion Intern will join Sound Transit's Enterprise Safety team within the Agency Oversight department. This team plays a critical role in fostering a culture of safety through data-driven analysis, reporting, and collaboration across departments. The intern will specifically work alongside the Safety Culture and Programs team, learning first-hand how safety promotion initiatives are designed, developed, coordinated, and implemented on a large scale. This role offers a unique opportunity to support, plan, and develop safety campaigns and projects that directly impact the safety and well-being of transit riders and employees throughout the Puget Sound region.

Key responsibilities include supporting the creation and rollout of safety promotion programs, assisting with the collection and organization of data for informed decision-making, and helping develop various communication materials such as presentations, reports, and program overviews. The intern will also be involved in coordinating resources and scheduling for safety events, researching safety regulations and best practices, and contributing to special projects like safety fairs and summits. This role encourages collaboration across teams and departments, providing ample exposure to public-sector safety work and program management.

Interns will benefit from Sound Transit's emphasis on work-life balance, professional growth opportunities, and recognition within the agency. Full-time interns also receive an ORCA card for free use of multiple transit services in the region. The internship runs tentatively from mid-May to late July for semester students, and mid-June to late August for quarter students, aligning well with academic calendars.
