The position of runner/expo is critical in the fast-paced environment of a restaurant, where swift and accurate communication between the kitchen and guests enhances the overall dining experience. This role serves as the lynchpin between the kitchen and the dining area, ensuring that the guests receive their meals promptly and in perfect condition. A runner/expo is constantly in motion, responsible for checking the quality and presentation of dishes as they come out of the kitchen and making sure they reach the correct tables efficiently. This position requires a high level of attention to detail, a thorough understanding of the menu, and a commitment to exceptional customer service.
In this role, you will not only run food but also describe each dish to guests, answering questions and communicating any special requests or modifications back to the kitchen staff. You will play a vital role in making sure guests feel attended to and satisfied with their meals, enhancing their overall dining experience. Additionally, you will assist with side work during slower periods to maintain the smooth operation of the restaurant, including keeping the workstation clean and ensuring all supplies are stocked and ready for both the front of house (FOH) and back of house (BOH) teams. Job Duties
- As the runner/expo, you are the lynch pin between the kitchen and guests, you'll be in constant motion ensuring plates are finished in the kitchen and food is delivered quickly and accurately to guests
- You'll describe the food being presented and handle or communicate guest requests as they come up
- Read tickets, finish plates and run food or delegate to a team member
- Describe dish being dropped at the guest's table and ensure they are satisfied before returning to the kitchen
- Retrieve any items guests may need to accompany their meal
- Assist servers in side work during down times
- Be sure station is set with all items needed by both the BOH and the FOH
- Maintain a clean workstation
