Job Description

Rhode Island Hospital, located in Providence, RI, is a leading healthcare institution known for its commitment to patient care and community health. As a part of Brown University Health, the hospital integrates academic excellence with comprehensive medical services to provide high-quality treatment and support to its patients. Renowned for its cutting-edge medical technology and dedicated healthcare professionals, Rhode Island Hospital serves a diverse patient population with a broad range of medical specialties and support services. The hospital is deeply invested in fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for both patients and staff, reflecting its core values of compassion, respect, and integrity.

The Room Service Host position at Rhode Island Hospital is a vital role aimed at enhancing the patient experience through effective communication and timely service related to meal delivery. This part-time role involves working 16 hours per week during the day shift, specifically from 4 pm to 8 pm every Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday, with rotating holiday shifts. The salary for this position ranges from $20.04 to $20.90 per hour. Under the general supervision of the Patient Services Director and the management team, the Room Service Host is responsible for distributing menus to new admissions, obtaining meal choices, and delivering or collecting patient trays, snacks, and tube feeding products.

In this role, the Room Service Host acts as a pivotal communication link between patients, their families, nursing staff, and dietary professionals to ensure that patients' nutritional needs and preferences are accurately captured and fulfilled. The host uses the CBORD computerized Room Service tablet system to enter meal selections, verify patient satisfaction, and address any meal service issues. Effective interpersonal communication is essential, as the position requires liaising with dietitians or dietetic technicians when patients have poor food or supplement intake and reporting any special dietary requests or education that patients may require.

The work environment emphasizes cleanliness and safety, with duties including monitoring pantry stock, maintaining refrigerators, and discarding outdated products as necessary. The Room Service Host is also responsible for maintaining a clean and sanitary work area and promptly addressing any safety hazards. This role may occasionally require performing additional duties such as those of the Room Service Call Representative when needed.

Ideal candidates will have at least one year of previous food service or customer service experience, preferably with familiarity with the CBORD system. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, along with strong communication, customer service, and basic computer skills. Physically, the role requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 35 pounds in a patient care environment. The hospital supports a collaborative team atmosphere and is affiliated with the International Brotherhood Teamsters union.

Rhode Island Hospital is dedicated to equal employment opportunities and strives to maintain an inclusive work environment free from discrimination and harassment. This role presents an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about patient care and service delivery who wish to contribute to a respected institution focused on health and wellbeing.
