Job Description
Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) is a leading healthcare organization committed to delivering exceptional patient care while upholding core values of integrity, patient-centeredness, respect, accountability, and compassion. As one of the largest health systems in the region, YNHHS provides a comprehensive spectrum of medical services through its network of hospitals, outpatient facilities, and specialty centers. Renowned for its commitment to advancing healthcare through innovative practices and compassionate service, YNHHS strives to improve health outcomes in the community it serves. The organization supports the professional growth of its employees and fosters an environment where teamwork and respect are integral to daily operations.
The Registered Nurse (RN) role at YNHHS is pivotal in delivering high-quality nursing care within various specialized units including the Heart and Vascular Cardiac ICU, Cardiothoracic ICU, and Cardiovascular ICU and Stepdown units. The RN works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or Clinical Coordinator and is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and supervising individualized patient care in accordance with unit policies and procedures. This role requires a nurse who is highly skilled in managing complex clinical situations, particularly with neuro and cardiac patients, and who can lead and collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team. RNs act as charge nurses when required, coordinating unit activities, supervising non-RN personnel, and ensuring smooth operation of their units.
At YNHHS, RNs are expected to engage fully in professional development opportunities and are encouraged to progress within the SPIRE clinical advancement program. The nursing roles require competency in critical care skills including neuro assessments, airway management, care for tracheostomy and ventilated patients, and managing specialized cardiac devices such as intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella catheters, LVADs, as well as care during special neuro procedures. The role includes responsibilities in patient education, discharge planning, and participation in innovative programs such as the "TIA" teaching program.
Working in this role offers nurses the opportunity to impact patient outcomes profoundly, particularly in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment such as the cardiac ICU, where complex cases involving myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, unstable arrhythmias, and heart failure are managed. Nurses in the Cardiothoracic ICU care for patients recovering from major cardiac surgeries and advanced therapies including heart transplants and mechanical circulatory support, requiring continuous critical thinking and advanced clinical skills.
The position offers competitive salary based on experience and qualifications and benefits including comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement savings plans with employer contributions, paid time off with flexible scheduling, and professional development opportunities. YNHHS actively supports the wellness of its employees through various health and support programs. This position is ideal for nurses seeking to advance their careers in a supportive environment that values continuous learning, high standards of clinical excellence, and compassionate care.
