The retention advisor role within the Student Support Services (SSS) Program at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is integral to supporting student success and persistence toward graduation. This full-time, regular professional staff position is focused on project/program administration and offers a day shift work schedule. The retention advisor is responsible for assisting in the recruitment, selection, and ongoing support of SSS program participants. This role involves tracking student progress, providing academic coaching, coordinating enrichment activities, and fostering a positive academic environment to encourage degree completion. The position reports to the Director of TRIO Student Support Services and follows institutional policies while operating with funding from the U.S. Department of Education. With a salary of $42,147, the job requires experience in academic advisement and retention strategies within higher education. The retention advisor will oversee the Peer Mentor Program by selecting and training mentors, organizing events, and building connections between mentors and incoming students. Job Qualifications
- Minimum bachelor’s degree with related experience in education, academic and career advisement, or teaching with knowledge of retention strategies
- experience in higher education setting
- preferred experience and knowledge in working with low income individuals, academic needs assessment, and organizing events and workshops
- master’s degree preferred
- preference given for experience with TRIO or federal grant programs
Job Duties
- Assist with the recruitment and selection of participants
- assist with developing academic progress plan contracts and monitoring student progress including degree plans and graduation checks
- provide academic coaching support for participants in course selection and registration
- coordinate and lead the Peer Mentor Program by selecting and training mentors, planning events, and fostering connections between mentors and incoming freshmen
- assist with planning and coordinating enrichment programs to promote an institutional climate conducive to persistence in and graduation from a postsecondary institution
- document all activities and results on participants for program reports
- perform other duties as assigned
