Job Description

The United States Navy is a prestigious maritime military force tasked with protecting the nation's interests at sea and maintaining maritime security across the globe. Known for its discipline, innovation, and commitment to excellence, the Navy offers a variety of specialized roles that contribute to the overall mission and well-being of its personnel. Among these vital roles is the position of Retail Services Specialist, a unique and essential part of naval operations that focuses on enhancing the quality of life and morale for sailors aboard naval ships and shore stations.

As a Retail Services Specialist, your role extends far beyond simple retail management. You will be a key player in fostering a comfortable, engaging, and supportive environment for the crew while deployed at sea or stationed on land. Your responsibilities will include managing and operating the ship’s barber shops, laundry and tailor shops, retail stores, coffee shops, and recreational services such as video game centers. By ensuring access to familiar comforts of home, from a good cup of coffee to freshly laundered clothes and a quick haircut, you help maintain high spirits and overall morale among your shipmates.

The scope of the job spans several critical operational aspects. You will oversee the procurement, receipt, and inventory management of ship store stocks, ensuring that the shelves are stocked with necessary items and that supply chains run smoothly. Financial record keeping and accounting are also a major part of your duties, where accuracy and attention to detail ensure fiscal accountability and transparency. You may also operate and maintain vending and cash collection machines, pledge cash collections, and serve as a trusted agent in monetary transactions aboard the ship.

This position demands versatility and the ability to work effectively in diverse environments. Whether in offices, retail spaces, laundry facilities, or barber shops, you will perform your duties with professionalism and adaptability. The environment can be fast-paced and dynamic, requiring excellent organizational skills and the capacity to interact courteously and effectively with diverse personnel.

The employment type offered by the Navy for this role includes both full-time active duty and part-time reserve opportunities, allowing flexibility for those seeking to serve while pursuing other career or educational goals. Compensation is competitive and includes a salary with the potential for enlistment bonuses. In addition, benefits such as free health insurance, free housing, and a retirement plan are provided from day one, creating a comprehensive package to support you and your family.

Educational advancement is highly encouraged and supported, with access to the Navy College Program, Tuition Assistance, the Post-9/11 GI Bill covering up to 100% of tuition, professional certifications, and even college credit towards degrees through the American Council on Education. This emphasis on continued education underscores the Navy’s investment in your long-term success and career growth.

The Retail Services Specialist is not only a managerial role but also a pivotal morale-building position aboard naval vessels and shore stations. Your daily actions directly impact the well-being and satisfaction of the entire crew, making you one of the most valued and popular members on board. Whether serving full-time or part-time in the Navy Reserve, you will have a meaningful career that offers personal growth, financial stability, and the opportunity to serve your country while ensuring that your fellow sailors can enjoy the comforts of home, no matter where they navigate.
