Job Description

The United States Navy plays a crucial role in protecting the nation's interests across the globe, operating both on land and at sea. One of the lesser-known but vital roles aboard a Naval ship is that of the Retail Services Specialist. This position is fundamental for maintaining the morale and well-being of sailors deployed in challenging environments far from home comforts. Retail Services Specialists ensure that service members have access to various retail and service outlets, making life aboard a ship more enjoyable and manageable. Whether it's providing a fresh haircut, managing laundry services, or running shipboard coffee shops, these specialists create a touch of home and relaxation in the middle of the ocean.

This role involves managing and operating the ship’s retail and service activities such as barber shops, laundry and tailor shops, retail stores, coffee shops, and even entertainment venues like video game areas. Retail Services Specialists take responsibility for procurement and inventory management, financial accounting, and cash collections to maintain smooth operation. Working both on shore stations and aboard ships, specialists may find themselves in diverse environments from offices to service shops, adding variety to their everyday routine.

The position is an enlisted Navy role that requires teamwork, customer service skills, and keen attention to detail. Retail Services Specialists become popular figures on board as they provide amenities that boost morale and improve the quality of life for sailors during long deployments. This career offers competitive pay along with numerous benefits including free healthcare, housing, paid training, and a retirement plan. The Navy also supports further education through programs like the Navy College Program, Tuition Assistance, and the Post-9/11 GI Bill, allowing specialists to earn college credits and professional certifications.

There are full-time and part-time opportunities, including service in the Navy Reserve where duties are performed during scheduled drill and training periods near the sailor’s home, with the chance to serve in varied locations worldwide during annual training. The role offers not only job security and benefits but also the unique opportunity to serve the country while gaining valuable skills in retail and service management in a dynamic, team-focused environment. Those interested must be U.S. citizens or equivalent, at least 17 years old, and high school graduates or hold an equivalent credential. This job offers a rewarding career path with the chance to contribute directly to crew morale and welfare while developing professional and personal growth in the Navy.
