Job Description

Dickinson College is a prestigious four-year residential liberal arts institution established in 1783, renowned for its commitment to global and sustainability education. Located in Carlisle, a city celebrated by Forbes as one of the most livable in America, Dickinson offers a vibrant campus life within close proximity to major urban centers including Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and New York City. The college is dedicated to fostering an inclusive community that supports diverse perspectives and academic excellence. It provides full-time employees with an extensive benefits package, including comprehensive medical insurance, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, generous paid time off, parental leave, homebuyer assistance, and tuition benefits for eligible employees and their dependents. The institution also contributes significantly to employees' retirement accounts, demonstrating its investment in staff well-being and financial security.

The role of the Retail Attendant in Dining Services at Dickinson College plays an essential part in delivering high-quality food service and creating exceptional dining experiences for guests across various meal periods. Positioned within the Retail Operations department, this role involves more than just food preparation; it includes engaging with guests, ensuring adherence to strict food safety and sanitation standards, and maintaining an organized, clean, and welcoming environment. Attendants are responsible for greeting guests warmly, preparing food according to established recipes and food handling standards, and managing inventory effectively to keep the service area well-stocked and efficient.

Additionally, the Retail Attendant supports food allergy accommodations and custom food preparations, demonstrating a thorough knowledge of food ingredients to meet diverse dietary requirements. They play a key role in maintaining compliance with health regulations including HACCP guidelines, Pennsylvania Department of Health standards, OSHA regulations, and ServSafe practices. This includes documenting critical control points such as food temperatures, batch times, and labeling information to ensure safety and quality. Beyond food service, employees in this role assist in training new retail staff, promoting effective communication across departments to foster a positive working environment.

The position is classified as emergency response personnel, requiring readiness to respond to college emergencies even when operations are delayed or closed due to weather or other incidents. Candidates are expected to achieve ServSafe certification within one year of hire if they do not already possess it. The work schedule primarily falls Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the academic year, with opportunities for summer employment during campus events. The role demands physical stamina for standing, walking, occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and lifting up to 10 pounds, alongside clear communication skills.

Overall, working as a Retail Attendant at Dickinson College offers a rewarding opportunity to be part of a vibrant college community dedicated to service excellence, food safety, and sustainability practices. It combines hands-on food service with customer interaction in a supportive, inclusive environment that values the contributions of every team member and supports their professional growth and development. This role is integral to the college's mission of providing memorable dining experiences while upholding the highest standards of safety and hospitality.
