Job Description

Michaels is the leading destination for creativity and celebration in North America, operating over 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada, as well as online through Michaels.com and Michaels.ca. Established in 1973 and headquartered in Irving, Texas, Michaels has built a reputation as the best place for all things creative, serving customers who are passionate about crafting, art, and DIY projects. Michaels also owns Artistree, a manufacturer specializing in custom and specialty framing merchandise, enhancing its product offerings. The company prides itself on fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for both customers and team members, with a strong commitment to accessibility and equal opportunity. Michaels prioritizes the wellbeing of its workforce by providing robust benefits including health insurance (medical, dental, and vision), paid time off, tuition assistance, and generous employee discounts.

The Event Coordinator position at Michaels involves planning, coordinating, and facilitating various events within a Michaels store environment, located in Des Moines-West, IA. The role is designed to create stress-free, fun, and engaging experiences for guests, including children’s birthday parties and other craft classes or events. The Event Coordinator acts as the main liaison with clients of all ages, from young children to seniors, ensuring that every event is memorable and enjoyable. Responsibilities include demonstrating craft project completion, performing face painting, and managing event add-ons such as goody bags and balloons to company standards. Communication with clients and store team members is essential, as is handling administrative tasks like answering emails, making phone calls, and completing paperwork. This role requires flexibility to adjust plans based on client feedback and to create contingency plans for unforeseen circumstances.

Beyond event coordination, the position also includes delivering excellent customer service by assisting customers with shopping, providing product solutions, and ensuring a fast and friendly checkout experience. The coordinator educates customers on rewards programs and credit card benefits, participates in omni-channel retail processes like Buy Online Pickup in Store (BOPIS) and Ship From Store (SFS), and supports store operational functions such as truck unloading, stocking, and merchandising. Maintaining store recovery standards, adherence to safety protocols, and engagement in daily cleanliness activities are crucial to uphold Michaels' brand promises. This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic retail environment requiring strong interpersonal skills, creativity, organization, and enthusiasm. Michaels encourages applicants who enjoy working with children’s events and possess excellent communication skills to apply. Experience in retail or customer service is also desired. The role demands physical activity such as standing for long periods, lifting, bending, and moving throughout the store, sometimes involving outdoor tasks and using equipment like ladders.

Michaels is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to full inclusion, offering reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities. This event coordinator role presents a unique opportunity to work with a top crafting brand dedicated to creative celebration while benefiting from comprehensive employee support and development.
