Job Description
Whataburger is a beloved American fast-food restaurant chain known for its quality burgers and commitment to community and employee growth. Established in 1950, Whataburger has become a staple in Texas and beyond, recognized for its dedication to flavor, service, and teamwork. As a family-oriented company, Whataburger supports a positive work culture where every employee is valued and encouraged to develop leadership skills and advance their career. The company is committed to equal employment opportunities and fosters an inclusive environment where diversity is respected and celebrated. Whataburger offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive range of benefits that support the wellbeing and professional development of its employees.
The Shift Leader role at Whataburger is pivotal in ensuring the restaurant operates smoothly during each shift. This leadership position involves managing daily operations, driving operational excellence, and fostering a motivating and positive environment for team members. Shift Leaders work closely with the Restaurant Manager to develop leadership capabilities, enhance team performance, and maintain high standards of food quality, safety, and customer service. This is a dynamic role that requires strong communication, multitasking, and coaching skills, as well as the ability to lead by example during busy periods. Shift Leaders will mentor and support Family Members (employees) to grow their skills and confidence while upholding Whataburger’s core values of integrity, heart, and collaboration.
Employees in this role receive competitive weekly pay and benefit from flexible schedules that accommodate day, night, evening, and overnight shifts, making it easier to balance work and life commitments. The position also offers paid time off, medical, dental, and vision benefits, disability coverage, and a 401(k) plan with a dollar-for-dollar match up to 4 percent. Career development opportunities are robust, with clear pathways toward leadership roles that can lead to six-figure incomes, especially for those advancing to Operating Partner status. Additional perks include the Whataburger Family Foundation scholarship program for dependents, educational support such as free English-language courses and reduced-tuition degree programs, and discounts on meals, wireless services, gym memberships, and computer software. The company also values employee recognition through awards and retirement celebration programs, making it a supportive and rewarding workplace.
The Shift Leader is responsible for coaching and training team members, ensuring compliance with food safety and workplace safety standards, managing labor and food costs, and driving sales performance. They are expected to create a positive work environment that encourages teamwork, accountability, and effective communication. This role often requires standing for long hours and occasionally lifting up to 55 pounds, so physical stamina is important. Shift Leaders may also support other locations within their Market, attend business meetings, and participate in leadership training sessions to further their development within the company.
Overall, the Shift Leader position at Whataburger offers an excellent opportunity to gain valuable management experience in the fast-food industry while enjoying a supportive culture and numerous benefits. It is ideal for individuals seeking to grow their leadership skills and pursue long-term career advancement in a well-established and respected company.
